I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that will not stay idled. Everytime I come to a stoplight or stopsign the RPM needle goes down to 0 and cuts off. Can someone help me with this problem please?

It may be that your iac or tps needs cleaning, adjusting or replacing. I'd start with a good TB and iac cleaning and see what that does for you.

Mine does the same thing, but I got some water in the engine last week, so that could be a good reason. It will idle high when started, but then idle too low and die when I come to a stop, so I have been driving with two feet for a while. The code says its the tps, but it is probably best for me to clean the tb as well.

if its throwing the TPS code then thats your best bet to fixing the idle problem, that sensor does not like what water one bit, you should also be getting horrible gas millage, i only got 4mpg when my tps was bad, as apposed to the 12.5 i normally get

I'm not driving too much at this point. Just to school and back, but i did burn through 1/4 tank pretty quick for just going to school and back for 4 days. So it probably is killing my mileage. (not that it is ever very good anyways)

Ok, So my jeep was still running funny. It would die when revving down to idle, and when driving, the engine would randomly just cut out. I bought a new tps, and changed the spark plugs as well, since they were wearing out. The engine runs way better now, probably close to perfect, but it still sets the code for the tps. I reset the system using the code reader, but it is still there.
any idea? the code I get is P0121

UPDATE: Its all good now. The next day the check engine light stopped showing, and never came back. the car has been running great, probably the best it has ever run since I have had it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Same problem here. I have a jeep cherokee 97 4.0l 6cyl and when i drive around 50mph my engine idles and i cant go any faster , then it kicks back and starts accelerating normal, this process is repetitive but a mechanic at a work shop at fort buchanan told me not to worry that it was a bad tps ( which i will replace tommorrow) also i removed and cleaned the piece right next to the tps i forget the name but it was dirtyyyy,, cleaned it up put it back in and the car ran better, hopefully tomorrow after replacing the bad tps it will fix the idling while at 50mph and my problem starting my car, in which i cant start the car without having to accelerate and at times after staring the car it shuts off when it reaches idle position.. ill repost! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />
