I also have been looking for a dana 44 for my xj. would a dana 44 out of a 1977 ford work?
As long as the gears are the same, what else will I have to change other than the control arm mounts? will the d44 have the same lug pattern, and driveline yoke as the xj?

a bud of mine did an axle swap with the rubicon front axle froma newer toybox. he is happy! but i know peeps that have taken the 9 inchers out of the laye 60"s bronco's & made them work pretty easily. there is a perfect 9 inch swap but extremely hard to find & thats out of a lincoln ( i forgot the name). its the ford granada body but the lincoln version of it. it has a 9 inch that is a very very good match & has disc brakes on it with ebrake.
