The idle adjusting screw on my '88 22RE throttle body works itself into low, low idle settings in a about 15 minutes of driving lately. It also seems turned pretty far out (the top of the screw is flush with the top of the bore it screws into.). It actually tightens down by itself as I drive until it won't idle. Maybe the idle air bypass passage is choked off with dirty gunk requiring the screw to be backed off too far. Anybody ever seen anything like this? -- Matt

So I'm not the only one this is happening to then. Whew <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
My idle screw decides to tighten itself as well. I guess thats better than it going the other way and falling out. 1990 22re

Not having had to mess with one yet, what does the head of the idle screw look like? It may be possible to use a wire or piece of metal to hold it so it doesn't turn. Often bolts and screws on aircraft have holes in the head so a wire can be threaded through to keep it from loosening. Knurled knobs lend themselves to having spring steel edges pressed against them to keep them from turning. Screwdriver slots can also have spring steel pieces fashioned to keep them from turning.

It is a large diameter screw with a slotted head. Should be easy to use a spring wire to "stake" it like you describe. I'd still like to hear from somebody who knows why this happens. -- Matt

Use a bit Teflon tape on the threads and or replace the o ring on the screw....

Man! I am really guilty of taking the lazy approach to this problem. I finally removed the screw to inspect it and sure enough it has an o-ring in a groove on the thick upper body of the screw. The o-ring on this one is junk so it doesn't seal and make enough friction to hold the screw from vibrating out of position. I had a little pipe dope handy so I goobered up the threads and now it holds fine. I'll look for the correct o-ring tomorrow and do it up right. -- Matt

Hmm, my 4runner idles right at 750 (adjusted timing and idle screw today in fact, then drove about 80 miles) with the screw about flush with the top. i can't remember what my truck was set at (same year, 86) but i seem to remember the same scenario for screw position roughly. I'll look at it tomorrow to verify.
