Getting the Wheeling Fever
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question, but here is my problem. I am in the process of parting out a monty and was wondering... what is the best way (cheapest) to send some of the bigger parts (such as the rear axle, trans, ect...)? Anyone have experience shipping stuff this big. Any suggestions? i have used greyhound before, but not much other experience. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance... Cole

Easiest way is to have the buyer pay shipping and then suggest that they make the arrangements for pickup using their shipper of choice. Rather than you hunting down the best shipper to use for each destination, they work out what's best the one or two times for them and just notify you. Assuming you're not starting a business related to this, that's what I'd suggest, especially if you're selling at a really cut-rate. Any parts that normally have fluids in them will, of course, need to be completely drained.

If you've already got a deal in the works then this likely wouldn't work, but if you have any future deals you may consider this approach.

That being said, I'll have to let someone else chime in, as I have no experience shipping large used auto parts that had contained fluids.

And yes, this belongs in Talk, not here.

It is just about impossible for a buyer to arrange the shipping, That does not work.
Greyhound works with light stuff, Body panels and such. Personally I find Fedex to be good on mid weight items, that is up to 150 or so. Strap stuff to a pallet or wrap up a bumper and they are good. The stuff on a pallet has to be boxed though.
Now the heavy or large components need to ride on a truck. I no longer can advise who to use since the pricing has been in turmoil the last 5 years. The truck will take it on a pallet, strapped and wrapped. Some items such as an engine you may be best to build up some blocking to support the load otherwise the pallet will break up.
I will be curious how you make out since I will be breaking down a 95 SR later this year and selling much of it.

Cheers, Charlie

Sure it does. If Sparky chimes in, maybe he can remember how much it was to have 5 used tires mounted on rims shipped from me to him. He arranged all the shipping. I just had to hand them over to the shipper. I can't remember who the shipper was, but IIRC it was one of the major guys (i.e., DHL, FedEx, UPS).

talk with your local carriers like abf, saia, roadway, blah, blah. if theyve got space on a truck, and its going there anyways... you can normally negotiate a pretty good rate. even without negotiating the rate will be far better than ups, fedex or our rich uncles postal service. and to top it off, most of the packaging rules dont apply... you wouldnt believe how ive seen things ship.
dam justice... that was subtile <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />. i like it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />.
