should be straigt up swap right?
anyone know both these transmissions?
i'm looking to go np231 but, (correct me if i'm wrong) everyone that has the 231 has the AW trans that is similar to the cherokee's. i'm 99% sure my V4A51 is not.
what made me think about this is that there's one at a local junkyard for $200 and the harness and control module can't be that much more. i'm thinkin it would be cheaper that a custom adapter. any input appreciated

Here's what I would do to avoid spending more cash than necessary:

What t-case did the V4A51 have behind it? If it is a round six-bolt pattern on the front of the t-case, then you're probably good to go.

If not, buy the AW4 tailhousing. Remove your tailhousing and see if it fits. If it does (pretty sure it will), just keep your transmission and swap a 231 onto it.

If it that doesn't fit, then think about swapping transmissions and you will have the tailhousing you will need anyways.

If you're serious about a swap like this, then dropping a t-case to verify stuff is no sweat.

i found some manuals online with diagrams and the tailhousings do not look to have the same bolt pattern. my stock t-case has a large square shape, and where the tailhousing bolts to the trans the pattern is asymmetrical, but round on the top and on the right side.

I would expect you will need a custom adapter made. I would not want to loose the short 1st gear of the 5 speed just to make a Xfer mount easier.

I did not take the time to read the trans designation on your post,That is the 2000 and newer auto. Sorry for the error on my part. I had the V5A51 on my mind.

oh yeah, should've added that it's for a 2001 sport.

and yes, the V4AW3's last year was 99 AFAIK.

i think i'm gonna go ahead with this swap. can anyone think of any hang-ups i might run into, as far as switching modules, or wiring. that's the part that concerns me(just a little).

thanks

The V4AW will want a cable to the throttle body for the throttle pressure control. That might be a stumble. Other than that it only takes three wires from the TPS for the control unit. The trans you are taking out communicates by CANBUS, Should not be an issue to back date the tech but I have not researched it to say for sure.

i saw that throttle cable and there is an extra hookup for it on the t/b.
so all the sensors on the trans are wired to the module then the module "taps into" the tps? i'll have to dive into my wiring diagrams and compare to 97-99 diagrams(which i'm having trouble finding).

thanks for the tips OldColt
