I'm prolly wrong but I think the first front lockers in Jeeps are in the Rubicons.. I don't remember any front lockers before them.

I have been looking into this - yes the Rubicon has a front E locker, but it is a Dana 44 (F&R)- The ones I have found for the Dana 30 are: OX, ARB for a positive on/off lock (Eaton does not yet make an E locker for the Dana 30) and if you do a google search, there are a number of part time or positraction types out there - general advice from what I hear is do NOT put a part time in the front end if this is what you are looking at.

You could use the Vari-Lok locker from a WJ.

BJ is correct, WB has the best suggestions. Add Aussie Locker to that list. Never see Party Trucks locker...Maybe not done in this country. I'd do an OX or Aussie if I couldn't afford the ARB. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Ox does not save money over an ARB, by the time you buy cables and controllers/ ARB and mini compressor they are within a few bucks of each other.

What is a party truck locker?
What is a part time locker? ARB OX? Selectable?
ARB or other selectable is the only locker for a front end.
(Of course, others will argue that Aussies and Detroits work just fine in a full time front end) Sorry they don't.
Even in 2x you are always spinning and racheting the locker, loading and un loading against the shafts and joints. Then in 4x it makes steering that much harder.

Beware of spending good cash on a locker for the front end when you are stuck with 3.55 gears in. The carrier split on the front is 3.73. The rear is 4.10.

Fortunately the rear 44 has "thick" gears available up to 4.88. Sooo you could go with more appropriate gearing in the rear without changing lockers....In the front however, they do NOT make a thick gear so if you chunk up for a ARB or OX for the front end to match your current rear end set up, 3.54 gears are the steepest you can run. ICK.

From what I have google'd the WJ's that have QuadraDrive came with Vari-Lok lockers in both front and rear. It's not a selectable locker it's a LSD using some Gerotor thingie from the planet Omnicron 5. It's in my WJ and works like a charm and could probably be found on a scrapyard. Only drawback is that I'm not sure if they came with 3.55 gears, then you'd have to swap out the gears also for 3.73, if that's the case you'd be better off with spendig some $$$ in a ARB or OX.

By part time I mean a positraction or LS type - not selectable...sorry for confusion.

If you put a posi up there and drive it on the hiway in Corlorado in the winter time you may live to regret it!
Front non selectable lockers can be a nightmare on slick hiways.

Richard,

As I understand it, your Jeep does NOT have manually unlocking hubs.

There are a number of us who have automatic lockers (e.g., Detroit Lockers, LockRight lockers, etc.) or limited slip differentials (LSDs such as Positraction, PowerLoc, etc.) in the front axles of our Jeeps; these Jeeps are used primarily off-road and only occasionally used on pavement, and very rarely on the freeway. HOWEVER, we only install the lockers there if we have locking front hubs that we can unlock on the street and then drive in 2WD. The ONLY time I lock the front hubs and engage 4WD on the street in my CJ7 is if there is more than 6 or 8 inches of fresh snowfall -- and then it's like driving in the snow offroad -- going slow.

If you can't disconnect your front wheels from the front differential, as with locking/unlocking hubs, then the only suitable front axle traction-aiding device (in my opinion) for your vehicle is a selectable locker (e.g., ARB Air Locker, Ox Locker, or one of the electric/magnetic selectable lockers). That way, you can de-select the locker and essentially run an open differential on the street.
