I have a 92' Toyota p/u w/a 3.0 v-6 and an automatic tranny (4x4) turning 31x12.5x15 Super Swamper Boggers and I'm having some very "funny" situations. The tranny is doing 2 things, first off sometimes, from a dead start, it won't shift out of 1st gear. What's weird, is that I can immediately shut the engine off, and start it again, and it works fine??? Also, sometimes while driving, the tranny will act as though it is slipping and will not shift between gears. I pull over, turn off the engine, and start it again, and it works fine! One thing to note is my speedometer doesn't work but peridically and when it does, the needle "hops" between 0 and the speed you are running. Sometimes the slipping problem occurs after the speedometer does this. Is this an electrical problem? I'm not a very good mechanic (but I'm learning), so I don't really understand how these things work. I though a/t's shifted based on a vaccum, but have been later informed that they also work off speed sensors.
So here's what I've done so far, I drained the fluid out of the tranny, no metal. I changed the filter since I already had it out to drain the fluid. BTW, fluid looked good, and didn't smell burnt. I also took it to a mechanic and had him connect it to a computer, and no codes came up. Currently that is where I'm at, and the tranny just acted up the other day (wouldn't shift out of 1st), AFTER I had performed the above maintenance.
Does anyone know what kind of problem I'm looking at? Is it electrical? The tranny was completely rebuilt in 2003, and now only has maybe 1000 miles on it since rebuild. Any ideas??
