Rear Main Seal - how to access? #871910 02/28/08 03:32 AM

Minor leaks from the front of the tranny and the rear main seal. Don't need to fix them til they get a lot worse, but I'm curious - one mechanic I talked to said he'd drop the tranny to get at them, the other said he'd pull the engine. Both put the job in the same price range (about $800). Is there a preferred way to do it? Seems to me that dropping the tranny would be easier than pulling the engine, but I'm not a mechanic. Thoughts/Opinions?

I prefer to pull the tranny for most vehicles. Especially rear-wheel drives.

Pulling the motor is a lot more work that nearly any tranny I've ever seen.

If you don't have a tranny jack and you work alone and you do have a cherry picker, the engine might be easier...

Yup, if you are by yourself get a tranny jack because tranny + transfer case = . That sucker is heavy, been there done that.
Another trick, use a strap down(with the ratchet) from one end to the other of the chassis and a floor jack to lift the front of the tranny. Now, don't forget the clutch alignment tool, a proper aligned clutch makes the slide in pain free.

I've R&R'd the tranny/t-case combo both with and without a tranny jack by myself.

Without the jack = [Linked Image]
With the jack = [Linked Image]

Do yourself a favor...get a tranny jack. You'll thank yourself that you did.

And yes, it's easier to drop the tranny that to pull the engine.

You must have an A.T.
You have to pull the engine to put the rear mainseal in the engine and the front seal for the M.T. with an M.T.. The bolts to the Trans run thru from inside of the bell housing.

Yeah, guess I should of mentioned that . So for me it would be engine out? I hope that leak never gets so bad that I have to address it any time soon.
