Actually,

Just replaced the tstat beginning of the winter on "Silver" cause it was doing zaxly what you stated yours is doing.

"Silver" is for all intensive purposes damn near brand new: '06 X tj with less than 15K miles.

So yes it's posible for the tsat to be the trick.

And I'd suggest flushing & back flushing + new fluid.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just though I'd give an update. Just yesterday I started getting steam coming out of the vents, window coated with slime, smell coolant, and now have it dripping onto the floor. I'm pretty convinced it is the heater core now. I found a guy who would replace it for $300, does that sound reasonable? He says it is about a 3.5 to 4 hour job.

FYI, thermostat and radiator were replaced last winter after the radiator cracked in 20 below weather (not fun). Probably because I took it in for an oil change at a Wal-Mart in California and I suspect that they added water to the radiator instead of topping it off with coolant. Needless to say I now do all of my own oil changes.

From past experience I will say PAY THE MAN! It really is a P.I.A. job. We had similar situation in a 97 w/ a 4cyl. without the slime, luckily it was fixed by just flushing about 2lbs. of gunk out of the cooling system.

In your case, I think it is the heater core due to the slime on the windshield, and leak in floorboard. You didn't say but I am assuming that the amount of air flowing out of the defroster vents hasn't changed. I suspect you may also have a partial blockage which would explain the gradual loss of heat.

Good Luck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
