This is something I know about first hand...our pit bull thought she was protecting me from one one night. She attacked it and got sprayed so bad she was foaming at the mouth. Of course, the next proper thing for her to do was go in the house and try to "wipe off" the nasty smell......all over my carpet, furniture and floors. I tried the tomato juice bath and all that did was get tomato juice all over the bathroom when the dog tried to "shake, shake, shake".

Went to the pet store and got a bottle of [color:"red"] NATURE'S MIRACLE Skunk Odor Remover [/color] . It worked like a charm. can be used on pets, people, clothing, carpet and other surfaces. I keep a bottle in both homes now.....just in case.

Nice! All we hafta worry about up here is wolves and porcupines with dogs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> on the latter.

A mixture of baking soda, peroxide and dish soap is what trappers use. I would make a paste out of the peroxide and baking soda and add a small amount of dish soap. Scrub with the paste and rinse. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

So, My beloved little Beagle, doing what she does best, found a skunk..

She got sprayed. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Her eyes, and nose seem to be fine..but..WOW she stinks!!

I've bathed her a couple times last night, she still stinks..bad.

I know there is something like, Tomatoe juice, or vinager, or something of the sort that does the trick, but I can't seem to remember for the life of Me.

I KNOW one of y'all HAS to know! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

>>>*We had a similar experience, our little ranch up North of Portland has Skunks around from time to time.

Le' and I came home from bowling one night to find our little Staffordshire waiting at the gate, all upset. She tried to stand between Le' and the driveway, Le' didn't realize and told her to move.

So the dog ran over to the bushes, and got it right in the face. I saw the cloud of spray and knew, so I pulled around to the house, then I ran inside to grab my rifle.

Meanwhile our Sam, being a bit in a crabby mood just attacked and chomped down on said Skunk, completeing the process of being coated nicely. That Dog would have taken on a Grizzly bear if she thought it was after the wife.

I got a rag and tossed the poor Skunk as far as I could, then headed back to the house.

Too late, I realized I had left the front door open.

Yep. Across the carpet, down the couch, back across the carpet, up over my armchair, back down to the carpet. Nose to the floor the entire way trying to rub the stuff off her face and out of her eyes. She managed to get the entire house from stem to stern before I could get her stopped.

I grabbed her and dumped her in the shower, getting myself all messed up in the process. Two gallons of Tomato Juice and 10 soapy washings later she was touchable but that was all. Baking soda, on and on. Le' got some active enzyme at the pet store, plastered the house and the Dog with it.

It was days later and we were still working on it. We actually thought we had it under control until the next week we went bowling, took the Dog with us.

Everyone wrinkled up their noses. It was weeks before that finally went away.

We still get Skunks around from time to time. But the Dog would go to the door, take one whiff, and turn around and come right back inside....*LOL**...

All you can do is wash everything as best you can and wait...*EB

We used the same stuff on our dog... It's all instinct and once they see a criter they just go for it. My mutt went after another skunk five mins after getting sprayed! That dog is a slow learner.

I did give her a bath with shampoo to get as much of the spray off as possible and then a coating of Natures Miricle.

Funny stuff, for a couple of hours she smelled worse, then it started to work. It seemed to shorten down how long she smelled badly.

It also works great as a way to clean the dog without a major bath. We call it ArmorALL for the dog. Gets her coat nice and shiny and she smells better afterwards.

When I was a young kid we had a Cocker that loved to chase skunks. The only saving grace was that when he got sprayed, he would go chase the neighbor's Dalmation out of its house and would stay over there until the smell went away. Didn't endear us to the neighbors, but worked well for us!
