Oh yeah, about the Downey intake... The Downey product is pretty simple and looks a lot like the K&N version. The mounting plate is a nice thick piece of aluminum. It comes with the holes pre-drilled for mounting it to the engine bay, but you need to drill your own holes to line up the air intake tube. The filter element seems well-constructed and I have just used the K&N Recharge kit to clean and lube it. With respect to performance gains, its hard to say. When I did this mod I also replaced the rusted out stock exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler and a hi-flow cat. Subjectively speaking, I do feel like the engine pulls a little stronger up Colorado mountain passes, but I try to stay below 4000 rpm and most of the "low hanging fruit" mods like this don't seem to do much unless you are really running the engine hard.
Hope that helps...

After looking at this link I decided to clean the MAF. I did some digging into what K&N had to say...their reply to all the rumors... K&N MAF main page...with videos!

"Oil does not come off K&N Filters"
Just that part of their explanation is enough to give me doubts about the response. I have had no oily gunk on my TB since I switch back to the standard filter.

I run the KN drop in filter, over oiling it is what causes the gunk build up. I barely used any oil on mine when I cleaned and oiled it.

Can the oil come off the K&N filter?Max air speed over the one filter they speed tested was just under 13mph. One setup included flowing 1000 cfm fer 3 days straight...with no oil coming off an over oiled (~30%) K&N filter.

That video reeks of "corporate propaganda".You would think that K+N would have offered an alternate theory as to why the sensors failed.K+N and other aftermarket companies offer filters that promise increased airflow and that claim is true.In order to increase airflow you must increase the size of the particles that you are allowing to pass through the filter material.I have been repairing commercial landscaping and construction equipment for 25 years and have tested many filtering systems(foam, oiled cotton and synthetic materials and paper)and under extreme conditions paper filters have proven to be the best.I have seen firsthand that dirt pases through these oil treated filters. In these filters mounted verticaly I have also noticed that the oil tends to travel to the bottom of the filter.I would assume that gravity is responsible for that.If minimal increases in performance are tops on your list by all means use K+N filters. If increased life and performance over the longhaul is your objective(most Toyota owners)than stick with OEM style filters.

Oil does indeed come off of K&N filters. Period. I've cleaned a number of AFM's TB's and air tubes.....
Brian K. Gallus I have nothing important to say.

As I think about their testing methods...they don't account fer dirt going through their filter and picking up oil. They only tested it with clean air. I can see how any medium going past the filter will pick up the oil as well as other dirt that has been trapped and dislodged by other mediums gitting past the filter.

This is a report from people selling the filters. They have a business to run and damage to control.
The OE filter MAY be more restrictive WHEN DIRTY. It also has lots more surface area!
Years ago my racey datsun had three K&N filters. They suited their purpose, but a racetrack was in mind, not the street, the car was heavily modified.
