Take the tank 0ff and get a water hose and have at it! That's the only way I know that would actually get it clean.

You could take it off and flush it with R-11. Which makes for a excellent cleaner. But of course you'll need a EPA licence to get it. Or try carb or brake cleaner, it will evaporate as well.

I dont think you should flush it with R11. not only would that be illegal, license or not, but the stuff costs about 75 bucks a pound.

Thats funny 'cause we buy, as a company R-11 flush kits, to retro fit R-22 systems to R-410a systems. When the linesets cannot be removed. The refer is vented.
I don't understand the thinking in the venting, but that is what it is sold for, cleaning out the contaminants. I guess the stuff is so good, it is excempt from the EPA regis..
You got me?
The refer comes in it's own little can and 1/4" nossle for the hose and presice instructions on how to use it.
Works great for wax, build-up and sludge problems due to moister and burn-outs.

For a little light reading:

As a universal refrigerant license holder and former hvac guy, as well as going through the initial phaseout in the 90's as a nuke mm on a fast attack, my initial interpretation of CFR title 40 part 82 was BAD IDEA. The rule is that Class 1 Group 1 controlled subsances such as R11(trichloroflouromethane) may be used only under specific circumstances specifed in the regulations.

Related Regulations:
(n) No person may use class I controlled substances produced or imported under the essential use exemption for any purpose other than those set forth in this paragraph. Effective January 1, 1996, essential-use allowances are apportioned to a person under º82.8(a) and (b) for the exempted production or importation of specified class I controlled substances solely for the purposes listed in paragraphs (n)(1)(i) through (iii) of this section.

(1) Essential-uses for the production or importation of controlled substances as agreed to by the Parties to the Protocol and subject to the periodic revision of the Parties are:

(i) Metered dose inhalers (MDIs) for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration before December 31, 2000.

(ii) Space Shuttleùsolvents.

(iii) Essential laboratory and analytical uses (defined in Appendix G of this subpart).

Appendix G to Subpart A of Part 82ùUNEP Recommendations for Conditions Applied to Exemption for Essential Laboratory and Analytical Uses
1. Essential laboratory and analytical uses are identified at this time to include equipment calibration; use as extraction solvents , diluents, or carriers for chemical analysis; biochemical research; inert solvents for chemical reactions, as a carrier or laboratory chemical and other critical analytical and laboratory purposes. Pursuant to Decision XI/15 of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, effective January 1, 2002 the following uses of class I controlled substances are not considered essential under the global laboratory exemption:

a. Testing of oil and grease and total petroleum hydrocarbons in water;

b. Testing of tar in road-paving materials; and

c. Forensic finger printing.

Production for essential laboratory and analytical purposes is authorized provided that these laboratory and analytical chemicals shall contain only controlled substances manufactured to the following purities:

CTC (reagent grade)ù99.5

1,1,1,-trichloroethaneù99.5

CFC-11ù99.5

CFC-13ù99.5

CFC-12ù99.5

CFC-113ù99.5

CFC-114ù99.5

Other w/ Boiling P>20 degrees Cù99.5

Other w/ Boiling P<20 degrees Cù99.0

d. Testing of organic matter in coal.

2. These pure, controlled substances can be subsequently mixed by manufacturers, agents or distributors with other chemicals controlled or not controlled by the Montreal Protocol as is customary for laboratory and analytical uses.

3. These high purity substances and mixtures containing controlled substances shall be supplied only in re-closable containers or high pressure cylinders smaller than three litres or in 10 millilitre or smaller glass ampoules, marked clearly as substances that deplete the ozone layer, restricted to laboratory use and analytical purposes and specifying that used or surplus substances should be collected and recycled, if practical. The material should be destroyed if recycling is not practical.

4. Parties shall annually report for each controlled substance produced: the purity; the quantity; the application, specific test standard, or procedure requiring its uses; and the status of efforts to eliminate its use in each application. Parties shall also submit copies of published instructions, standards, specifications, and regulations requiring the use of the controlled substance.

So i guess he could use it as an extraction solvent, maybe. I am not going to look up whether or not cleaning a gas tank is an essential laboratory or analytical use.
I guess if he wants to go through all that, have at it!!!

God I'm a nerd. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Man you have either a lot of time to kill or you must just love to type.
I thought the idea I gave would raise some brows. In fact, when I heard that the navy used to use it to clean their aircraft, I thought the whole thing was absurd. Than a couple of months ago here comes the owner of the company I work for with this aluminum container, (about the size of a medical oxygen tank) With the label that read, R-11 for the use of cleaning out refer systems after burnouts or changing refrigerants.
A couple weeks ago I had a chance to use it, worked pretty darn good to. It got a lot of garbage out of the system too.
When you blow it through the line sets, you catch the oils and other deris at the other end with a bucket. It does state to use the entire container on a system.
Yes, as a EPA licence holder it is against the rules to knowlagable vent refer. But you are allowed to vent a certain amount of it (I think ten percent of the charge).
With or with out a licence, I don't think a civilian could walk in and buy the stuff. I have not personally went to get it and I don't know how distributor handles the stuff. But it would definitely do the trick.

It's still not real good for the environment. CFC-11's ozone depletion potential is pretty low (1.0), but it's global warming potential is about midway between best and worst of refrigerants at 4,680. CFC-12, 114, 500, & 502 all range between .221 and 1.0 for ozone depletion and up to 10,720 for global warming potential (CFC-12).

HCFC's (22 & 123) are better with ozone depletion at .02-.04, and global warming factors from 76-1780.

HFC's (23, 134a,.....) have ozone depletions of 0, but global warming factors of 1020 - 12,240 (the highest of any refrigerant).

The best refrigerants (for the environment anyway) are the natural ones - carbon dioxide, ammonia, and propane. Ammonia is the best with zero glbal warming and ozone depletion.

If anyone wants the full chart I could scan it.

Ok the guy has a 20 gallon tank with 3 openings in it..small ones at that. All I can see is a lot of liquid soap and a water hose! MAybe a towel if he can get his hand in there to wipe it down and maybe a lectric fan to help in drying it out.. But cleaning a gasoline tank with a refrigerant? Not a freaking chance.

Gotta agree with BJ on this one. Soap and a hose...not to mention everyone should have soap and a hose readily available.
