Stripped PS mount hole #874101 03/09/08 06:17 AM

While doing some 200K maintenance, I was trying to put my PS pump back in after changing the timing belt. The big 14mm bolt would screw right in and tighten, but I think both of the smaller 12mm bolts stripped out the hole in the bracket where they go. (I may have tightened them a wee much last time). They would bite at first, but never tightened.

Short of a new PS pump, are there any ideas on how to repair these stripped holes on the pump? I was thinking of some JB weld and then re-tapping, but I'm not sure how well that would work on an aluminum housing.

Either take the bracket off, ground the welded nut off them
and re-weld a new nut on or get drill them out, get a slightly
longer bolt, and put a good nut on the backside.

I'd ground off the stripped nut and weld a new one on in its place.

You could drill and tap it to a 14mm size bolt or try a SAE size bolt 7/16 - 9/16 (not sure on the size).

Problem is, there's no nut on the backside. The bolt goes through the bracket into the pump and stops. It's only a small M8x25 (12mm) bolt that's supposed to go in there.

The main 14mm bolt does the same thing, but it's longer and actually threads into the block to secure it. I figure that is the main support bolt, while the other two just keep the pump from rattling around.

"while the other two just keep the pump from rattling around"..... if that's the case, then wrap some plumbers Teflon tape around the bolts and put some Locktite on 'em.

I think I'm going to try that "form a thread" stuff. I don't have a tap and die at my disposal. If that's no bueno, then we'll do it the hard way.

Temporary is my middle name.

Thanks, guys...
