where is the leak coming from? on mine it was just a dirty rubber gasket on the buel filter on top of the tank. I took it off, cleaned it and put it back on with a spacer in the spring clip, so it would stay on tighter. that fixed it up perfect. (im not sure if the pre 97 cherokees have a different tank set up tho.)

In my experiences most gasoline smells that don't have an obvious wet place or drip have been from the TANK AREA. Big JIm

I've looked at Landon's Cherokee several times for this, and I have yet to find any clear signs of leakage.
He's getting a very strong fuel odor when driving. It's choking him out inside the cab even at freeway speeds.
Personally, I think it's got something to do with the exhaust pipe ending underneath the truck in front of the rear axle, but having never actually smelled what he's complaining of, I couldn't tell for sure. It's fairly plausible though, as he has a small pile of aftermarket engine performance goodies all over under the hood.
I think what Landon is hoping for with his post (incidentally, his first on 4x4Wire), is for someone to chime in who has had a similar problem and fixed it. This is his first time ever on a web forum, so please go easy on him.

If it is an exhaust smell... wouldn't that be a smellable difference from a gasoline smell? Is the vehicle CLOSED when the smell happens or are there windows open? Big JIm

my buddy has an 88 cherokee with an exhaust that exits under the middle of the jeep, after about 15 minutes of driving you get the smell of exhaust fumes inside the jeep

Not a problem to ignore.
My buddys 88 Cherokee caught fire last week due a leaking injector and burned up the entire engine compartment before they could get it put out.(Hard to open a hood when there fire under it!) The vehicle is a total loss. We'll pull the ARB locked axles, winch bumper and lift out but pretty much eveything electrical and plastic is shot.
He noted a slight gas smell in the cab the day before it caught fire.

the injectors like to leak on the xj's the seals go out on them. the vent lines on top of the gas tank will come loose sometimes & give you that smell. check all of the hoses & fuel filter follow them down the frame & under the hood. fix it quick though fires suck.

Take it to a different mechanic, what you have is a gas leak maybe a damage or broken line and they will change some auto parts of the car, be carefull any spark near the leak will make the car get on fire, don't take it to the same guy anymore take it to a real mechanic shop might cost you little more but will save you from problems and even your life.
