Fair value of a 2dr Sporty? #875031 03/13/08 03:53 PM

Moving on with the DD. Wifey got the 2002 2dr from work, and she drove it as a daily. Then she didn't like the SWB handling on curvey back county roads, so i traded with her. She now drives a pristine totally rebuilt 4dr Sidekick (something she's always wanted), and I'm driving the Sport. But it's not me, and I don't plan on doing anything with it, as it's not my cup of meat.

Soo, with winter ending, it's down the road. I plan on picking up a used TJ as my DD.

I checked KBB and NADA and was surprised. It's a 2002 ragtop with cruise and a/c and 145K. It's had many items replaced (cats, tank, h20 and oil pumps, rebuilt head, etc) In fair condition (this is more good than fair, it's about $4300 according to KBB. For real? I didn't think the maintained resale very well.

Is it reasonable to ask $4500 and expect around $4K? What has anyone else found when buying/selling these things?

Funny that u mention this right now....

My neighbor has a 2002 2 door (stock). I was about to get it and asked price (they said $3700). The right side is banged up from a prior accident.

After talking with the wife she said, "Hel1 no!" it is wrecked.

Only the front passenger fender is messed up. They have never used the 4x4 before.

It is black. The soft top is sort of ragged. I will prolly get it but I was wondering the value myself. There is kelly blue Book and there is wanton desire from the current market.

I will post a pic of this vehicle soon. I never realized how much shorter the vehicle actually is----in comparisan to the 4-door! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

It looks way to tiny! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

However, I realize that the 2 dr. is seemingly rare.

Callypouas, Airdale, Rokia, and Indian white devil are the only one's who's got these.....

........All I am saying is that the price advantage may be on YOUR SIDE!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

That's cool. Yeah, you never did see many soft-top Sporty's, and finding the last year 2002's seems really rare.

This one isn't bang-up up or turdy. Top is nice, and windows are fairly clear. Front glass was just replaced, as a red-tailed hawk decided the original glass was just too scratched and had to go. About 2 months ago, while vac'ing out the carpets, I found it had a factory CD changer under the seat. And here I thought the CD in the dash was enough.

It's a great lil trucklet, and with the 225 studded snows, it's a tank in the white stuff. But like I said, it's just not me.

So by the sounds of it, $4K isn't at all unreasonable. In fact, it might be a great deal for someone. Hopefully, it will go to someone who really wants it for what it is (last year of the "true" Kia 4x4s), but it could be a moron 16 y.o. if they got the cash.

I'll kinda miss stopping over here and gleaning info. Hopefully, I helped stir the pot and opened possibilities while I was here. The first one to swap in an Kick auto/t-case and run an OTT adapter to a Toy t-case will reap the benefit of the nugget of tech.

And please forgive my trespasses, as this will be my first foray into the dark seedy underbelly of the Jeep world.

It is worth what someone is willing to spend on it. I think $4500 is a good place to start and you might get more than the $4000 you want. I had a 98 TJ I bought new and it was a great DD, I wish I still had it but I would not have had as much fun with the Kia and there never would have been an upyourkia. There are very few SUVs I would trade the Kia for, a TJ Unlimited is one of them.

Good luck, Dennis

I like alot of the old stuff, I had a 72 Chevelle, a 78 Monza, and a 70 CST10 pickup that were great. I also had a 2000 ZR2 Blazer that was a rattle trap after about 12,000 miles and I kept finding screws on the floor. Even with the factory limmited slip in the Blazer My Kia would trounce it off road. Even after 160,000 plus miles on the Kia my only rattle is the spare tire carrier with an oversized tire on it.
I do like Chevy's 6.0 and the factory rear lockers, they are the most positive limited slips on a stock truck, almost as good as a Detroit Locker. Now if they would just put some ground clearence on thier trucks.
See I told you I could find something good in a Chevy <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />.

Don't know if this will help. SURF CITY MOTORS

They will probably let it go for $3300.

If we just hadn't bought a new Mazda 3 for the wife last month this one might have tempted me...

How does she like her Mazda 3? In a year from July we will be getting my wife a new car. She loved her 2003 Focus and wan't another one but I'm leaning toward the 3. It's on the new platform that Ford should put the Focus on with alot sportier look.

She really likes it so far. She got one with the "S" Touring package. Had a lot of trouble finding one with a Sunroof and a 5 speed. Seemed like they only sold automatics. We test drove a 2.0 with a 5 speed and it was pretty quick, but it didn't have alot of options. We looked at the Mazdaspeed3 with a 6 speed, but she wanted a sedan, not a hatchback. Wow...what a 100 EXTRA horses do.
The 2.3 gets pretty good mileage but not quite what the 2.0. Bought it thru Costco at $300 below invoice. Not the best deal, but didn't have to haggle. One other thing, my wife keeps cars 10+ years so she bought a 10year 100k extra warranty. It covers alot, and if you don't use it, you get your money back at the end of the warranty.
If you don't want a sunroof, the "i" series (2.0) has pretty good guts.
One other thing, no timing belt to change on the 2.3..it uses a chain.
Later,
