How would there be more air turbulance after you removed the butterflys as opposed to when it is functioning normally, and the butterflys were open?

When it is closed, the intake passages are longer, and provide the low end torque, and when it is open, it's tuned for more power at a higher RPM. Very cool I think. Apparently you need to build the bushings for those butterflys out of a quality material or they will kill your motor upon ingestion.

I guess I was looking at it like: If I can't have the butterflies, then there would be no need to have the existing setup. All of the turbulence is the result of a system that is no longer functional and therefore not necessary.
I am going to look at rebuilding it all though. All of this dialog has made me want to get it working properly now! I'll see what a local machinist would charge for maybe brass bushings.? I know there was a thread where someone did just that.
I do appreciate all the comments!! cheers <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Hey Frank, you're probably right about the turbulence, and the abstract has me convinced enough but I think I'm gonna skip the rest of the writeup!! My head is already swimming enough. Thanks though. I am going to pursue the repairs/rebuild of the plenum.

bumping an old thread......

the lower intake from the imported 3.5 fwd cars (ebay engines) will allow the use of the 3000gt intake...but that would put the throttle body into the firewall. there is an intake plenum out there that points the other way but i cant remember what its from. i think its a hyundai. this would put the TB over the timing cover on the drivers side and may or may not clear the radiator hose. either way you will have to use the debonaire 3.5 lower intake. the SOHC 3.5 lowers dont fit the DOHC heads in any way. i have 1 sitting here. the 3000gt lower doesnt fit either.

Just throw away the valves and tig the holes shut and you will gain low end torque, even if you don't tig the holes shut. there is a guy on the wire that sells non butterfly lower intakes do a search he lives in quartzite AZ and when i offered to make replacement lower intakes he posted up that he already makes them.
