Ok this is REALLY starting to annoy me.
Backlog: Had major brake problems that eventually lead to the replacement of everything besides the rear drums, the master cylinder and the brake lines. I repeat, EVERYTHING else is new! That includes pads/rotors, shoes, calipers.
I barely drive the truck, so its kinda hard to tell exactly what is going on, but right after leaving the shop I noticed it wasnt right.. But here is the gist of it:When stopping (after we CUT the rear drums and replaced the shoes. Drums were WAY OUT) i still get this grinding noise and although the truck stops well I can feel and hear it vibrate/grind too.
The only thing I can freaking think of its because the drums were so out that they are to thin now and that the rear shoes I drove on before we cut the drums have become glazed. I am sick and tired of throwing money into this truck.
So Do I replace the rear shoes and drums and PRAY, HOPE, BEG, and PLEAD they are ok. Or is it something else? I know for a fact I have all quality stuffup front (brembo rotor/hawk pads), but I used these 40 some odd dollar napa premium shoes in the rear.
Ok.. I am SOOOO SORRY to keep bothering everyone, but like I said its hard to track down problems it seems and its driving me mad! Its getting to the point where I think I may sell my T and buy a fullsize ford or chevy!

I rebuilt my back right brake after having trouble with it, but it turns out that it was binding because of a worn axle shaft bearing.
I replaced the shoes and the drums because there was gear oil inside & the weights fell off the drums. It turns out the drums are not out of round. Oh well.
Since I haven't seen a drum brake in 15 years or more I had some problems the first time I put the brake together while trying to figure out why it was binding. I did not grease it properly nor did I work the adjuster. I did not bother to adjust the parking brake lever either. The brake did not work and made a lot of noise.
I also could not get the shoe/drum clearance right with the worn axle bearing.
It is a little tricky to get the brake drum off if you have never done it before but it's worth a look. You have to manipulate the adjuster to loosen it a little. You can see the toothed wheel if you shine a light into the hole. To find the release lever poke just forward of and below the tooth wheel and you will eventually find it - it's a springy lever that moves 1/2 inch or so. If you keep going and loosen it more then you can just pull the drum off with your hands, and not bother pressing it off with m8 bolts.
After putting the drum on the brake is not ready for service until you work the parking brake until the adjuster stops clicking. If you push the pedal before doing this the adjuster can fall out. Work the lever by hand then mount the wheel. Then get in the cab and operate the handle. Then mash the pedal and operate the handle a few more times.
Gasket between axle flange/drum 42444-35050 Shoes 04495-35230 (kit) / Drum 42431-35210 (each)
(Both the shoes and the drum are revised/superseded part numbers from the time the truck was manufactured)
If anyone wants to hunt for the OEM on the aftermarket, the whole brake is made by aisin and the shoe material is "NBK LN508-FF"
Brembo also makes drums, their number is 21080.
"Performance/Quality" brake shoes are hard to find, shoes seem to be commodity items. The only name brand shoes available that I ever heard of were Wagner Thermo Quiet. Who makes NAPA's?

When you say "while stopping" is it only when the brakes are applied? Or does it ever happen when coasting? Does it feel like it's coming from under the seat to slightly aft of the seat? Could be this! I don't mean to scare you, but I had a grinding/moaning sound on my 4runner that I thought were the rear brakes or wheel bearings. Both were fine and I replaced the bearings anyway. This is what it ended up being.
Brian K. Gallus I have nothing important to say.

No, its only when I apply the brakes and its def coming out of the rears.
What I a thinking is since we took two passes off the drums and the drums already had 200k we reached the max runout allowed and thus thats it.
What I think I should do replace the drums and the shoes (just incase they glazed or something) and take it from there. We did exactly as your saying with working the parking brake and adjuster and whatnot.
I was thinking too, that I should make order all new parts like the adjuster and springs b/c they do have 200k on them and maybe worn out.
I will look into the rear bearing.

You need a 12" caliper to measure the drum ID. If it is smaller than 297mm it should be fit for service. Have a good look first, especially at the shoe and drum surfaces. Maybe you can hear the noise if you jack up a wheel & turn it while someone presses the brake lightly or the parking brake is pulled out a few clicks.
If the shoes are glazed maybe the glaze can be sanded off. Sucks to replace new parts.
I have some spare brake hardware (got some with that axle) but none of these items are wear parts. The little steel cables for the parking brake might stretch some but there is an adjuster to take that up. The springs are fine if all the coils are touching when it is unloaded.
Does it sound like metal/metal grinding? How loud is it?

Again: Thank you for the help!
It sounds like metal to metal and its moderately loud. I can hear it grind with my windows up or down in light traffic pretty easy. There is also a whistle: Now, it could be the driveshaft as when I hit the brakes the noise is not affected, I dunno. Tuesday I am driving to the driveshaft place and seeing what they can do and by weds/thursday I will probably have new parts for the rear.
I am gonna get the outside caliper and measure it, but have the parts on standby before I take it apart. The shoes I sanded the glaze off after we cut the drums, but imho once they get that stupid glaze (BTDT on other cars) it is worthless.
The grinding was getting worse and worse the more I drove and used the brakes. For awhile I knew something was up, but I only drove it up and down the block or maybe out onto the main road a little to test it, the noise was there and so was the grinding-but it wasnt as bad if you had taken a trip and been on the brakes for a good half hour. Like I had yesterday.

Have you pulled the drums since the grinding started to make sure the pads haven't slipped of the shoes? Won't take you that long...really! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Grinding noise is usually from either metal to metal contact or from new brakes seating into the drum. Assuming the brake shoes are in good shape and the drums are too, then look to the chances of the shoes getting sideways inside the drum when you hit the binders. Did you replace the brake springs, especially the hold down ones? New springs and related hardware rules.

No, I only replaced the shoes...
So what parts do I need: New springs, adjusters, what?
