Emergency brake light comes on while driving. #87569 08/17/02 01:37 AM

This just started happening yesterday. While I'm driving the emergency brake light comes on for no reason - stays on for a few seconds - then goes off. The e-brake lever is all the way down (I check it every time the light comes on). I don't feel pulling to one side or another when the light comes on so I doubt if the brakes are engaging. Any thoughts? Thanks.

R.

either your alt is having issues, or you need to add some break fluid. those are 2 of the most common reasons why the break light comes on.

When it's the alternator, it's usually a combination of both brake and charge lights.

The level of the brake fluid will drop as the brake linings wear down. Have them checked if the fluid is low. Brake fluid does not "disappear" all of a sudden.

The sensor could be bad, too.

Well how about that!?! I looked at my brake fluid reservoir a few days ago and noticed that the level is right on the "MIN" mark. But I didn't think much about it because even at the MIN mark there is a lot of fluid in there. I'm guessing that as I drive the fluid is sloshing around and tripping the sensor to come on. I'll bring the level up to MAX tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks a helluva lot Cobb & Code33 for the kick in the brain!!!!
BTW, I did have my rotors turned a few months ago so that probably affected the fluid level as well.

Yeah, when the rotors were turned I got new pads put on so I'm hoping they're good.

Body Damage is Cool
yeah mine did that but I took it in and had the rotars rotated and probably some fluid put in it and it took care of it.

so dont just top off the MC. it means that your pads are getting low...

Thanks, Leo. I guess I'm gonna have to do my own inspection then maybe take it to a shop for inspection. Back when I got my rotors turned the guy told me there was not much he could file off without going out of specs so maybe the rotors are too thin. I suppose rotors that are too thin could cause the same effect as pads that are wearing down? True??
