Some kind of hesitation during acceleration #876112 03/19/08 02:04 AM

Do the NGK plugs for a 22re have to be gapped? I gapped a set and made the problems I was having seem a little worse.
I pulled them and put a set in ungapped I still have the same issue. The plugs had dark Carbon around the ring and thin white soot on the prong.

I replaced the 02 Sensor and used the same gasket it didn't seem like that big of a deal looke to be in good condition.

I saw an article on checking the MAF sensor. My wrenching level does not really include electronics past basics.
Is there a simple test to see if the sensor works? The search using Mass airflow resulted in one article similar to the topic.

The problem I really notice in first and second is hesitation then all of the sudden power. I assumed it needed a tune up so plugs, Removed the D cap cleaned contacts(it was under a year old) same with the rotor, pcv valve, O2 sensor. I will continue searching the forum. Could it also be the EGR? I know these are the most annoying posts but I can't start the bumper build without this being out of the way.

You likely have an Air Flow Meter (AFM) instead of a Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF). It can be tested as follows:

Thanks 4crawler, I actually just found a post with similar complaint. It ended up being the guys 02 sensor. I got the bosch with the clip already on it noticed from the old sensor that their was a great deal of difference between the nub on the 02 one was half an inch or so longer than the bosch and had a different set up. Then in your response post you suggested a denso sensor. You have been most helpful and I thank you for your time. will check it out.
Also I just got the approval hopefully for the headlight mod for my birthday. Girlfriend rolled her eyes at me.

I ran the test as per 4crawler instructions,

Mid sixties (local temp) These are the results.
1.E2,Vs=92
2.E2,Vc=180
3.E2,Vb=296
4.E2,THA=589
5.E1,Fc= no response

Test at running temp(approx)15 mins driving.
1.E1,Fc= no response
2.E2,Vs=189 (closed)/683 (open)

I believe it is safe to assume that these readings mean the AFM is not the culprit? This was a cheap multimeter from Harbor Freight so the numbers bounced around 15 plus or minus on some of the readings.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I would lean toward the 02 sensor as well. Thats what caused me all kinds of grief untill I switched back to OEM brand.

-1989 4x4 22re(pretty good in the mud)

Yeah I have the Bosch, I just ordered the denso online and it should be in some time next week. Then I am gonna try and get store credit on the bosch becuase it has a 90 day warranty.

I am up one denso O2 sensor and 93 bucks for the bosch. The guys at autozone looked at me like I was dumb and it took 20 minutes but I got my money back.
The problem also seemed to clear up. We will see after a tank or two of gas. Thanks for all input and assistance.

I have a similar problem but didn't consider the O2 sensor. It was replaced twice, a long time ago, but only after the "engine" light came on. Could an O2 sensor be bad without causing the light to come on?

Thanks.

Not sure. I bought it from a dealer so I assume it's a Denso. Is there an easy way to tell them apart?
