Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok I haven't posted in close to a year, but I decided to get my Montero running again. Went out and bought the CORRECT battery...anyone else run into Advance Auto, needing something for a Montero engine, only to find out that your engine is a Raider swapped engine, and absolutely NOTHING from the Montero transfers over?? Well, I have lol.

Anyways, here's my problem. When I put in the battery. I pumped the gas a few times, started it, and it would only keep running as long as my foot was pressed all the way to the floorboards. Now I know absolutely nothing about Carburators...FI guy. But I know that when the pedal is pressed to the floor, it doesn't feel like there's enough gas being delivered..in fact I'm sure of it. Kind of like it should be opening the throttle up farther, but it doesn't. How do I adjust this and what could be the problem? I just want this thing to run right again lol.

It could be a few things I would check...

1. Fuel filter
2. Any loose or cracked vacuum lines
3. Fuel pump
4. timing

Why did it quit running in the first place?

Personally if it were running right when you put it away I'd skip this to the front of the list and start w/: Carb (Take it off, clean it)
The bad thing about carbs is that they cant sit long before its detrimental to them. It probably needs a quick cleaning, slap it back on. When you do that just change the filter, its like $5 and check the lines going to it, but I doubt they have any impact over your problem right now. Start w/ the carb.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok so since it was cold out today, and the car is sitting at my mothers...outside...I just replaced the fuel filter. Didn't fix the problem. BUT...

I discovered that my Reed valve assembly is smoking. I believe it's the Reed valve, but the Haynes manual only shows its picture once, and makes no note of it. It's on the exhuast though, and yeah it's smoking. While I kept my foot floored, it would run, and this thing was smoking. What is it and what does it do? Why would it be smoking?

Also, I want to rephrase a previous comment. When I floor the pedal, it seems like maybe the cable is strched out? Like it's not opening the throttle all the way. Could this just be a stretched cable? I noticed that the choke doesn't open...is this normal? As I said, I know nothing about carbs.

Tis why the Weber is far superior. If your state doesn't have the laws slap one of those on and tear out all the vac lines and emissions crap. Pretty much simplifies things.

I believe the engine is a Raider engine, since it has all Raider parts and not a single Montero part from the parts store works on it...so will the Montero manual work for me?

I agree it's simpler but not superior.

If you want to fix the mikuni you need to study the factory manual. There is no easy quick fix, you either understand the system or you don't. Read the carb section in the FAQ to get started.

Same thing, different digit in the VIN, different plaque on the steering wheel, different badges...Montero = Raider = Shogun = Pajero = wherever the market was. No 4-door Raider until the Dakota rebadge. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
