Okay, nothing is wrong with the Aussie gears, I'm just missing the components necessary to set up the backlash eliminator since they weren't installed on my original gear. The FSM doesn't show them, but CAPS does.

[Linked Image]

I've got a couple of choices. One, I could just get the spacer 30086SG, and not run the backlash eliminator. Or just use the snap ring I installed in place of the spacer because it's serving the same purpose--to properly space the bearing.

Two, I could also get the snap ring 30093SE and sub gear spring 30368, and take a chance that I would set it up the backlash eliminator right. Looks pretty simple--from the drawing it looks like the backlash eliminator goes first, then the spring, then the snap ring into that center groove, then the spacer, then the bearing, then the selectable snap ring.

I like option two. If the parts are still available.

On your install, besides the tight snap-ring part, you know about having to grind the shift fork a touch to clear the new gears, right?

Yes, I read your install thread a couple of dozen times--it was a big help.

Tell me McV, since you didn't install the B/L eliminator when you did yours, have you ever noticed any low speed gear chatter?

Low speed and in slow speed, or low speed as in Lo on the t-case side?

If the former, my tranny sometimes feels a little iffish when shifting. It was a rebuilt one from a donor that had a bad head. I bought it for parts in general and the rebuilt tranny in particular. In the end, though, not sure how good a job was done on the rebuild as adter a few thou miles I lost the big nut on the output shaft on the tranny. It's a known thing to watch on a rebuild and whoever did mine punted that ball.

If low means Lo and the latter above, then I must admit to my total lameness and say that I have yet to wheel it, and this is now heading into the third summer with them in. The only time they have seen is driving downt the street once in a while to feel "how low can you go?"

For all I know, the first time I really get to wheel it, the darn thing might explode on me. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Low as in being in 4L as opposed to 2H or 4H. I found information in this web site that says the backlash eliminators "help prevent low speed gear chatter which is more commonly experienced in vehicles fitted with automatic transmissions."

I was hoping to find out if anyone has experienced ths low speed gear chatter. I know you have an M/T, but I was curious anyway. Doesn't sound like you've experienced it when you've been in 4L.

Looks like I'll be running without the B/L eliminator because the snap ring that holds the spring against the BLE is "a vintage part that MAY be available after a wait of 6-12 months." This from Poway Mitsubishi parts department. No thanks!

I also found another source for the 2.85 gears. 1298 Euros. With the exchange rate the way it is, that makes the Aussie gears look like a hellava bargin! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Give me the Mitsu part number for THAT part. I'll be home in Sasebo soon...

Email sent Jon.

Funny what throws you for a loop. I got the hard part done--getting that snap ring in the groove through the 3mm space between the input gear and the clutch hub.

[Linked Image]

I even figured out a one-person technique for installing the chain without having to install the rear and front output shafts at the same time (details soon in procedure that is nearing completion).

But the little things come back to bite you. There's an o-ring on the countershaft that fits through the counter gear; I proceeded to tear up the new one and then the original trying to fit it through. More waiting until the replacement comes.

But its all downhill from here! I'll be crawling soon! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> Sure could have used the gears on this week's trip to Big Bear.

Buttoned up the install of the gears into the spare case this weekend. As advertised, there's really not that much to it--just a couple of gotcha's that'll creep up on you if you're not careful.

While I was at it, I removed the rubber breather on the control lever housing and replaced it with a brass fitting. Needed I think--I noticed evidence of water entry into the t-case sometime in its history. A 1/4" hose barb to 1/8" MIP from Home Depot screwed right in. Although the aluminum cover hole was unthreaded, that size fitting is perfect for self-threading into the 10mm hole. Sealed it with some grey RTV.

I already have enough hose and an extra hose clamp left over from installing my extended diff breathers. Just need to get a miniature fuel filter to terminate the inverted end at the top of the engine compartment.

I'll install the spare case into the truck over the holiday weekend. I feel like a kid with Christmas coming next week! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

She's done! Finished the swapout and took her for a test drive. Quite a difference; scooting along at a blistering 7mph at 3000rpm in 4Low. Can't wait to do some crawling!

Also finished the installation/rebuild instructions. Plenty of pictures and tips for anyone considering this mod. Capn has graciously offered to host the .pdf file--I sent him the file but it will probably be awhile before he has time to post it up.

Thanks a bunch Capn! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />
