what motor are you talking about? The only carb'd yota motor is a 4cyl and has a manifold (1). Those numbers arent the carb numbers.

They are the "Executive Order" numbers, you can look them up on-line:

CARB=California Air Resource Board, not abbreviation for carburetor.

As 4Crawler mentioned, it is the number CARB gives to a product once it verifies it street legal for use here in CA. W/o the numbers to punch in at the smog check time you will fail smog for any aftermarket add-ons.

I don't know, supposedly the air is measurably cleaner than it was 30 years ago, despite a big increase in the number of vehicles. I don't know about you, but I prefer breathing clean air....

The retarded side of CARB is their unwillingness to move away from oem equipment, and move to tail pipe emissions only. As long as the non oem part doesn't increase emissions, it should be legal. They just need to use more logic based reasoning which would have avoided the whole MTB fiasco, which cost us millions of $$ in extra gas cost and now clean up costs, and MTB additive replacement cost.

I agree with you, but I understand the thinking behind the OEM thing.

The OEMs have deep pockets & lots to lose if their products fail early. Aftermarket manufacturers tend to not have so much to lose.

Granted the bi-annual inspection would catch the failed products fairly quickly, but how many lawsuits will CARB have to deal with when all those "CARB approved" aftermarket products need to be replaced after a year or two & there is no manufacturer to go after?

It's a CYA game, short & simple.
