well today (technically yesterday) was my birthday and I had a great one!!! first thing this morning I woke up to a beautiful sunrise with the fresh snow, then I headed on in to work and worked my little pooper off until about 11:30am. then I got a call on the P.A. system for me to head to the bosses office. I figured it was what usually happens on somebodys birthday, the boss offers to take you out for lucnh....nope....thats where I got the best birthday present of all, a good ol' fashioned layoff.
So you could understand my frustration....

That sucks (or its great!) depending on if you liked the job! What were you doing? I see Alberta seems to be slowing down quite a bit lately. I'm in Regina, SK and run out to Calgary at least once a week, so I see firsthand whats going on there. Everybody seems to be moving back to SK, the country's booming aroud here.
Oh and BTW-Happy Birthday!

That sucks. $100/barrel and you'd think things would be picking up like crazy.

yah it was oilfield...it was Hot Tapping (weld and drill into live pressured pipelines) the company was Red Flame Hot Tap Services. Back in November they branched off into doing Non-Destructive Testing, so the owner bought out a company and now that spring break-up is here he must be pretty broke and had to lay a few people off...I can understand why they did it, but what a kick in the @ss on my birthday.

Sorry to hear that. The good news is there is still a 3 percent unemployment rate in Alberta...Those who don't have jobs, don't want to work. You should be able to pick something up quick. Good luck and happy belated birthday

Well, if you have your 1A license and not much over your grade 3, there's millions of jobs in the trucking industry. Things sure have changed in the 21 years I've been at it. Finally, you dont have to be gone all the time, and theres decent money in it. I retired a couple yrs ago, but a friend of mine talked me into helping out hauling JD parts from Regina to Calgary. I try to keep it down to 1 a week, pays $500 a rounder. Leave Regina at 5:30 pm, home the next day at noon, with a couple hrs off in between. The guys that are running fulltime (mon-fri) are dragging in $6500-$8000/mth with weekends off and home all the time. Where was this yrs ago when I had some ambition still in me?
