Hola Gang, new here but I think I came to the right place... Having some tranny noise probs out of a stock 5 speed... Have what sounds like a gear grinding noise from it, works fine, shifts smooth with no hanging or grinding... Any thoughts?
Also, bout time for a engine rebuild (almost 300k) so any thoughts about a V8 swap? Maybe a 305?
Thanks in advance...

Are you pretty sure the noise is coming from the tranny and what motor do you have now? I can tell you right now your not gonna like the trouble and cost of a V8 swap, if you currently have the 2.8 V6 a swap to a 3.4 is really pretty easy.

Morning,
Yeah, pretty sure... I think... I put it on jackstands and started disconnectinig stuff... Front drive shaft, rear drive shaft etc... rotating the tranny after each was disconnected ... still there ... coupla things I forgot to mention is that right before it started (started while I was driving btw) it seems to have snapped the speedo cable about 14 inches into the cable sheath... That and after I was unable to put it into 4L ... grinds when try... Was thinking it might be a syncro problem... After posting about the V8 swap, I dug into the forums more ... You guys are great... I learned more in the few hours of reading last night than I have in the last 5 years with AllData and reading the many manuals that I have collected... Am doing more research into the 3.4 but it sounds like a plan while I work out the noise issue... Only reason I was thinking about a V8 is that I have a spare 305 from a Porche 914 V8 Swap a few years ago
Thank you again,
Rick

Well next little issue... after draining all the lubs, I pulled metal and chipped teeth from the transfer plug (not just shavings) so probably tranny and transfer are toast... Question this time is engine removal... Can I just yank the whole unit? Engine with the tranny and transfer still attached?

UNLESS YOU DROP THE FRT AXLE ALL THE WAY DOWN, IT IS A VERY TIGHT FIT, TO REMOVE , MUCH EASIER TO REMOVE THE TRANNY AND THEN THE ENG JERRY

Jerry, Thank you... Thats what I was thinking, have to drop it to rebuild the suspension and half-shafts while I'm doing, so was leaning that way but not really not satisfied with the tranny jacks or adapters that I can get to drop this thing so prolly gonna build one, or find one with some decient steel to add some braces too... Later will include some pics of the progress... No laughing though She gets upset Rick

IF YOU DONT HAVE A HOIST , YOU CAN GET PRETTY DECENT FLOOR STYLE TRANS JACK FROM NORTHERN, FOR ABOUT 250.00 THAT IS NOT A MODIFIED FLOOR JACK, WHICH WILL HURT YOU EVENTUALLY , IT HAS A PRETTY LARGE SQUARE SADDLE, WHAT I DID WAS MAKE A BOLT ON BRACKET THA LOOKED JUST LIKE THE REAR TRANS MOUNT BOLTED TO THE EDGE OF THE TOP PLATE OF THE TRANS JACK , AND FOUND THE BALANCE POINT FOR THAT MUA HONKING TRANS, IT ACUTALLY DOES HAVE A BALANCE POINT , I THEN DRILLED THE PLATE AND WITH TWO 10 MM BOLTS SET THE TRANS ON IT AND BOLT IT DOWN, NOW YOU CAN ROLL THAT THING ALL OVER THE PLACE AND TILT IT 4 DIFF DIRECTIONS , IT WILL ACTULLY TILT TO ALLMOST 45 DEGREES WAY MORE THAN YOU WILLEVERE NEED, TO REMOVE AND INSTALL THE TRANNY BY YOURSELF, NOW THAT THIS IS DONE MAKE YOUR SELF ANOTHER ONE TO FIT UNDER THE DIFF , A SORT PIECE OF CHAIN WILL HOLD IT, THESE TWO PARTS WILL SAVE MANY CUT FINGER CRUSHED ARMS AND PINCH, NERVES AND THE JACK IS STRONG ENOUGH AND HEAVY ENOUGH IT WONT TIP OVER , I HAD ONE OF THOSE TRANNYS SLIDE OFF A REGULAR LARGE FLOOR JACK ONLY WENT ABOUT 4 INCHES HAD MY RIGHT ARM PINNED UNDER THE RIGHT CORNER UNDER THE TRANS FER CASE , NEVER TOUCHED ME , BUT I COULDNT MOVE , NOW TRY AND MOVE A 200 LB TRANS UP WITH YOUR LEFT HAND WHEN YOU ARE TWISTED ASS BACKWARDS , FINALLY WIGGLED AROUND ENOUGH TO RAB THE JACK HANDLE REMOVE IT FROM THE JACK AND USE IT AS A PRY BAR TO GET THAT THIN UP ENOUGH TO GET MY ARM OUT , WHEN I GOT LOOSE MY NEXT STOP WAS NORTHERN AND GOT ME A DAM JACK THAT WOULD TRY AND BEAT ME UP. PLEASE BE CAREFULL JERRY

Jerry, Took your advice and hit Northern up for a Torin, plus another 3.5 ton floor just in case... I did replace the chain with a 1k strap so I could torque it down more... Seems pretty solid when I hooked it up this morning, but had to back it down some, wasnt getting the clearance I thought I needed to. Instead of torqing the torsion bars any more than they were I elected to have a set if ramps moded to give me another 2 inches plus some jack stands... So gonna try and yank that puppy in the AM... I know the deal with the light stuff, first exp with one was a 79 Chevy with a 9in lift... Tranny tipped and I caught it with my chest, good thing I was young and in decient shape then but still cracked a few ribs... Still leaning towards the 3.4 but kinda leary of the DOHC... Anything I need to look out for? Have a line on a 95 3.4 out of a Firebird and was thinking about doing some bolt on mods to get it up to the DOHC hp range but dont know which one would actually be the best option... Any thoughts?
