Just picked this up, turned out it was my deceased friend's daily carry. He's been gone a year. His wife can't find the manual; the one I found on line isn't helpful for the Q.

It's a Para Ordnance P10-40 .40

There wasn't any ammo with this, so am wanting to know what factory ammo to run thru this thing, as I'm not entirely convinced that it's broken in.

I'd also like to find out the reloading specs, if anyone has a reloading bible out there. Haven't gone shoppin' yet.

Thanks!

Can't answer the Q, but that is a sweet little piece there.

Not sure if you're looking for brand or weight, but .40 typically comes in 180 or 165 for the heavier loads. If you go lighter, you start getting into .357 mag ballastics. It should be able to feed and fire any of that stuff.

I can't imagine it wouldn't feed just typical plinking target ammo, which is usually in the heavier 180/165 range.

I've heard that shorter barrel 1911 styles do have some feeding problems, but that's usually with .45. Not sure how. 40 would affect things.

As far as hollowpoints, personally run Corbon in all my personal guns. Nt that its necessarily any better. I just know that it works and its usually easy to find around here and its usually at least a little bit hotter than the other stuff. For my .40s I try to find 180, since I want the heaviest loads for woods carry, but typically end up with 165, which I think is a decent compromise.

For factory ammo, you can usually find winchester white box (WWB) or CCI Blazer Brass at wally world and the price isn't too horrible. For carry ammo (assuming defense against humans as opposed to 4-legged things) you're probably fine with any premium 165gr or 180gr hollowpoint that feeds reliably in your pistol. As Brian alluded, you might have to try a few to find your fave, but Speer Gold Dots, Winchester Ranger T, and Federal HST are the latest & greatest, at least in gel tests. CDNN has had .40 Ranger T (can't remember if 165 or 180) for $13/50 for a while, which is a pretty decent price for premium JHPs. Ranger T works great in my 9mm and .45 but I haven't specifically fired it in .40.

As for reloading, I'm planning to get a decent press once I have a house to put it in. You'll have to pay attention to your brass as .40 runs higher pressures than 9mm or .45. It's been a while since I read up on it, but I believe Glocks have incomplete chamber support which can lead to some bulged cases, which will be more of an issue with .40. Reason I mention this is if you're planning to scrounge range brass (especially from a law enforcement range) it's pretty darn likely that the .40 cases have been run through a Glock. You can probably use it, but you won't get 20 reloads out of it like you can with .38spl. Glocktalk, 1911forum, and others have reloading sub-forums where you can get some thorough advice from reloading fanatics, guys whose hobbies include scrounging wheel weights from tire shops, melting them down into ingots, and casting their own bullets. They'll have plenty of advice as far as sources for components, which companies' brass to avoid, etc.

Remington factory ammo

Reload your new brass, the reloads you get at the range is hit or miss ( pun intended )

Speer Gold Dots

What I use for home protection in .45, 9mm, and .357. The 9mm have a very large expansion...almost double original size. The other two not so much....tested by shooting into two hardback books set back to back, one about 3 inches thick, and the other about 2 inches, rested against an upright log.

Thanks guys; I'm not a range monkey in that sense (if you're gonna swipe my brass, ASK FIRST dammit). I've still got a pile of dirt from setting up the pad for the cabin which is earmarked to backstop a 50 yd range on my property.

Just wanted to see how hot I could run this piece; 180g makes me happy.

Gearin' towards critters. I've had something BIG going thru my yard all winter, and it's bedding down not too far away. Kept throwing circles around the neighborhood all winter, so I wonder if we're denning in an abandoned cabin. I'll hafta nail some fish to a tree and see what we get.

Bad enough I had to play 'toro' with a hungry moose calf a couple winters ago.

I have a funny feeling we're going to be seeing our woodpiles start getting raided later this summer too. I can fix dat.

Seems the more my 45 gets broken in the worse experience i have with Winchester White Box stuff stove piping, im not a limp wrist shooter, but it happens about once every 150 rnds, but its the cheapest target round,

ive been looking at a 3" 1911 Kimber, but ill have to wait and buy that for a grad. present to my self in 6 months...

I've got the boomstick, no prob; the prob is drawing this thing out of close quarters if it's in there. It's only about 500 ft from my house; followed the trash trail that general direction. Snow pack was iced up, so no tracks to go by.

Fire sights; screw the scope for this scenario; ain't in the open, fersure. Just hope it ain't inside that 21 feet if we meet comin' round the corner of the house!

Shoot, pistol-wise was all I had was peashooter stuff. If you recall, it's been a B(*&(8 for me to find anything that'll fit my hand, short of laying out the dough for a 1911 or similar. This one fits pretty nicely; lookin' forward to some range time.

I'm NOT interested in luggin' a rifle all summer long, that's fersure.
