Getting the Wheeling Fever
i have a 2inch shackle lift and 2"BL now. looking at the shackle now, i find it really ugly and reduces my departure angle. i was wondering if anyone has tried relocating the leafsprings on top of the axle. i reckon i'll need to remove the rubber bumpstops there, and by the looks of it i'll be gaining 3inches(or maybe 4") of total suspension lift when i put back the old shackle.

so would this pose as a problem with the driveshaft? too much angle? (being this is a SWB, gen1 diesel). any other suspected problems, opinions, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Maki,

If you do the SOA for the rear axle, how will you accomodate the difference in front to rear altitude?

The rear SOA will definitely affect your axle alignment, you may consider pinion oiling, vibrations, lengthing the e-brake cables, changing the spring configuration to fight axle hop,and other 'caused' issues.

Just my thoughts.

Yes, it has been done. Selimyar did a few years ago. People do it all the time in FJ40s and other vehicles. I dont think you will have an oiling problem. It will probably give you 3-4 inches of lift. Have you looked into a different spring pack or add a leaf?

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

More like 5-6" in an SOA. You need to measure the thickness of the spring pack at the spring pad minus the thickness of the main leaf and measure the distance from the bottom of the existing spring pad to about 1" above the axle tube and add the two measurements. That will give you a pretty close measurment in lift.

The only way you'll only get 3-4" of lift out of a SOA is if you're working with a 2" axle tube, a leaf pack that consists of two leafs or you're welding the springs directly to the tube. Or 'D' - "All of the above."

IMHO, before I worried about what a SOA would affect I'd figure out how I was going to lift the front the same distance first.
