I'd bet on a binding "U" joint.....Sounds like the same kinda banging I got when trying to go over a bank that was too tall & steep - the drive shaft loaded up and banged a couple times, sounded like hammer blows till I got off the gas. Thought I was going to have to finish the trail in front wheel, but it actually didn't blow the joint. As Rob suggested, try it in 2wd to narrow down where it is.

I have done the 2wd test already, so that pretty much eliminates the back 1/2. I will try these other ideas though. I have not done anything w/the front axle u-joints. All the other joints from the tranny forward are greased and appear to be in good shape, but I'm not above tearing it all down and replacing them at this point. Thanks for the info. guys!

I would definitely look at the axle shaft u joints. Like I said earlier, my ford would "pop" and "clunk" when that drivers side one was shot. I didn't realize all the needles were gone until I looked at it.

If it was not swapped out then that Jeep should have a D300 in it.

I would change ALL of the driveline fluid. As Bob said, you could have a chunk of something floating around in a gear set somewhere.

Finally found it! The front end got swapped by mistake to 3.73's and the back is at 4:10! That will not work! Thanks for all the info (or most of it anyway), I knew it had to be something with the gearing. Anyhow, ready to get back to doin' some muddin'.

What's really stupid about all this is that throughout this whole thread people are telling you to check your gear ratio and it takes you this long to do it? Instead you insist on arguing saying that you know a thing or two about 4WD's.

It did not take me this long to find it, I have not had time to look at it until last weekend. Yes, most of you did tell me to check gear ratios those were the one's I thanked, the one's who need to shove it were the one's who told me I had it in 4wd on hard packed soil! I mean really, who on here doesn't know that? The reason I checked the gear ratio last is b/c I figured that a mechanic messing that up is like messing up tying your shoes at age 30, kinda doesn't happen much. What happened was the parts house gave him the wrong parts and he did not check them (nor would I as it is a very respectable local parts dealer) when he replaced the stuff in the front end.

I just get chapped on message boards when folks are condescending towards people who are asking legitimate questions. I took the advice of the one's who were trying to help (ie. check gear ratios)and it got me where I needed to be, and for that I'm thankful. It is the one's like BigJim who want to tell me, that I'm driving in 4wd on hard packed soil, when I've been driving this jeep in the same conditions for darn near 20 years. I even told him that several time, but still he talked down to me like I was an idiot. Oops sorry to sound offended, but an attitude such as that is negative and has no place on a message board.

Anyhow, thank you again to those that helped, I appreciate it, and now it's time to go muddin'!

Duece I JUST reread all of your posts... You don't have a problem! Them gears have been in that Jeep for 3 years now. The ratio is correct! You have the same problem everyone has with 4X4's.. When you get traction in 4 your Jeep will pop and jump around..
I betcha it only does the popping when it is in a turn..don't it?
Big Jim

OMG, I even re-read this one! That's good stuff right there, thanks for the insight!
