Getting the Wheeling Fever
95 Rodeo, 110k miles, auto transmission. Recently I've stopped driving daily but when I do drive it on local streets with stop and go, the check transmission light flashes on and (according to the manual) it goes into backup mode where I have to shift the gears manually. I turn the car off and back on and it gets rid of it, but I just did this and minutes later it happened right away again.

Any insight as to what's going on that would cause this? Is the tranny going, slipping, etc.? I've checked the ATF level and refilled it (wasn't really that low).

Isuzu dealers are few and far between nowadays so I'm not sure if a typical shop would know what to do with a 'check transmission' light as I don't think other vehicles have it. Any insight would help... thx.

This is more than likly a low voltage problem check you battery. You are either about due for a new one or your alt is bad. You can search for posts about this and you're going to find a lot of info about this problem and low voltage is usually the culprit.

Well I got my battery checked and it came back just fine. Alternator is charging it back up just fine, and under load, it is putting out the correct voltage. Startups are also fine.

So am I looking at a sensor of some sort? Specific sensors or just a general computer issue? It hasn't happened at all recently but I'd hate for it to happen on some long trip.

Still holding out hope someone has some insight...

Mechanic says the tranny is fine, code is overheating so he flushed the transmission and also added a cooling fan. Problem remains. Says it's probably something electrical inside the transmission. I still owe him $300 and now I guess I'm bringing it to a transmission specialist.

I've still got my money on your battery. I had my tranny rebuilt at 160k and a exterior cooler installed for around $3,000. So when my light started flashing at around 210K I wasn't very happy. Three weeks later I had to replace the battery and I've not had that light come on once since then and that was 3 years ago. (Been a daily driver for 2 of those, it sat in the shop for over a year while I took my time doing the 3.4 engine swap)

AAMCO diagnosed it after taking the tranny out. Electrical components are fried. Mentioned poor design for cooling in Rodeos/Passports/Pathfinders. Will cost me upwards of $3500 in total to get the car back working again (includes the tranny rebuild). Or pay $1000 for their labor troubles to get it back broken as it was. It's a 95 with only 110k miles and I'd hate to toss it but money-wise it doesn't make much sense as it is a 2nd car and it is aging. I told them no.

The only other thing to consider now is if I go somewhere else and have them put in a used tranny. Are the electrical components like all the solenoids, pressure control, temp sensor harness, etc. all already in there?

Well where do I start. AAMCO transmissions as a whole does not have a very good reputation, not to say there are not some good ones around. They are a franchise and anyone with some cash can open one regardless of how much tranny experience they have. They advertise comprehensive training but thatÆs mostly business training and not technical training they are expected to hire experienced people to do the work. Not a single one here is still in business. They say electrical components (ôsö, more than one) are fried (shot, burned up) Sounds like it shouldnÆt even be running at all, but it was and probably not all that bad except that you had you had to turn the engine off to reset the computer every so often. Your tranny is (was) going into limp mode which is a classic sign of a low voltage problem. Another thing that bothers me is that they say ôpoor design for cooling in Rodeos/Passports/Pathfindersö not once have I heard anyone say anything about poor cooling in these. Not to say they have the best system. These are trucks have decient towing capacity and are great off roaders which can put demands on the tranny, so keeping it cool is a must, heat is the #1 killer of transmissions. I wonder if they were just talking to sound like they know what they are doing. One thing IÆve learned is the people on this site are very, very good at troubleshooting and fixing problems with these trucks, better than most Isuzu dealers and certainly better than most independent shops. Not because they are better mechanics but because they see the same problem over and over and over again. There are not enough of them out there nor can people afford to take them to the dealers about the only time they see the same problem over and over again is for recalls. I still think I didnÆt need to replace mine as soon as I did. But I plan to keep mine for a long time so I donÆt I donÆt feel quite as bad. My $3000.00 tranny was actually a brand new one with all the current updates, it has no dip stick. There was a bunch of these new ones around 5 or 6 years ago I found a place on the web selling them but you had to buy like 100 which is how I think my tranny shop got one from their wholesale parts supplier. IÆve read a couple posts that talk about rebuilding these and they say it should cost around $1500.00 and I would think R & R should be no more than $500.00. IÆve got a 4L30E out of a 90 Trooper I could sell you, but it probally would cost you around $600 to buy it and get it pulled and shipped. Its in a trooper I bought for parts. The vehicle has 120k on it, but I have no idea what kind of shape the tranny is in so I wonÆt warranty it.. The vehicle got broken into and the dash trashed trying to hot wire it, which is why they scraped it. Since you already have yours out I think your better off having yours gone through and put back in, but I think you should shop around. You might put a post on here asking if anyone knows of a good tranny shop in your area that has experience rebuilding the 4L30E. If you do decide you might be interested in my used one let me know.

I just want to correct my last post I just realized I didn't say what I meant to. When I said "There are not enough of them out there nor can people afford to take them to the dealers, about the only time they see the same problem over and over again is for recalls." What I really meant to say was; People with vehicles over 8-10 years old, 150K+ miles and out of warranty normally don't or can't afford to take them to the dealer. Also I just realized yesterday that the used Trooper I'm getting has a 5 sp Tranny and not the the 4L30E auto like I thought. So If anyone is intrested in converting their 88-91 V6 auto Trooper to a 5 speed I have everything you need.

Need a Spot
im having he same trouble as well. my rodeo is doing the same thing. check tranny light comes on and goes into limp mode. ive checked the voltage for the battery when the truck is off and when its under a load. ive even started the truck and took the negative battery terminal off and its still runs at idle. im tranny not to set it on fire....lol.....but i got this feelin that its something small and right in front of my face but i cant find it. its a 1994 rodeo with the 4l30e. i have no clue what it could be. its a solid truck with no rust and i hate to see it just sit there. is there any hope for me???

its easier to look good than be good
