Had a thought and confirmed it with this.

The 2nd gens still have a mechanical t-case lever for hi/low range. That means the shift motor is only used for 2wd/4wd selection. Since you're cutting the front output off.... just remove the actuator and plug the holes. Leave the 2/4 shift rod in 4wd. No issues.

If you get a SOTF donor, plug your harness into the rear case and the push-button, lights, etc should still work.
