Need a Spot
Greetings folks. I'm a long-time owner of a '95 Montero which is about to pass the 300,000 mile mark. It still works great and I absolutely love it.

I've already searched repeatedly for posts on this subject but haven't yet been able to cure the problem. I'm sort of losing it. I'd vastly appreciate some help on the subject.
The problem:

Phase 1: Overdrive, speedometer and odometer stop working simultaneousley. They then work intermittantly for a few miles then quit completely.
Phase 2: I replaced the vehicle speed sensor. All items work intermittantly for about 20 miles, then quit completely.
Phase 3: I checked this forum. I cleaned and checked the coolant temperature switch. No change.
Phase 4: I pull out some hair, then post this message.
Phase 5: Go enjoy the warm weather while eagerly awaiting informed replies.

I appreciate your efforts to help with this problem. Getting only 16MPG is getting REALLY old.

Regards,

Adam

This is an electronic speedo, right? I think you were on the right track with the VSS replacement, but did you turn it right on install? If it's like the cable speedo's, you have to turn the VSS in the bore in the tcase output so that the little arrow points at the number of teeth on the VSS gear on the housing. It's not likely the speedo drive gear is toast, because it's steel grooves cut in the output shaft. Check the teeth on your new and old VSS driven gears. You may have been unlucky and got them almost in mesh.

Another cause is the outputshaft housing bushing walking forward until it interferes with/eats up the VSS driven gear. Had any Ujoint problems?

Nuthin's broken under my 3.5 yet, but that doesn't look like mine. Where did it come from? Does it point sideways toward dside, or straight back?

It screws directly into the transmission casing, below where the driver sits. It lays flat and points side-to-side. The unit is about 1-1/2 in. wide and 2-1/2 in. long.
The post inside of it that turns has only one guide nub and can only be inserted into the transmission in one way. There is a 3-wire harness that attaches to the end.

New one on me. I'd try spinning the sensor by hand/tool with the plug connected and see if the speedo registers.

On reflecton, I think there are two vss's, one on the tailshaft of the tcase front output shaft, rearward side of the case, for 4wd detection? gen 1 had one there...

Then I think there is a second one on the tcase rear output shaft, a 4pole pulse generator. It provides inputs for the speedo, odo, and TCM which controls o'd function, a likely culprit.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just went through this same issue. After verifying I had a good signal at the instrument panel, I pulled the speedometer and noticed a burned trace on the circuit board. I checked it with my meter, and sure enough, no continuity. I soldered in a wire to jump the burned part, and now it works perfectly.
