Hey.
I have a problem that has beat me to death trying to figure it out. Specs are: 99 wrangler, 4.0, 4wd, 4 inch Procomp lift, sye installed, 33 tires.
Before the lift and before the sye install I heard a slight "scraping noise" at low speed. Not very loud and thought it was a brake. My son came in on leave and lifted the jeep. Drove fine and still does over the past 6 months. But, I noticed a couple weeks ago the "scraping noise" was louder, and in fact is now getting pretty noticeable at speeds under 15 MPH. Occurs as shaft is turning, clutch in or out, no matter what gear. Seems to start a few minutes after pulling out, then stays constant until it cools down. They sye is only a couple months old and also replaced the ujoint in rear (the sound appears to be in the rear). Now the other part.
I put rear up on jack stands and no sound. Put it in local transmission shop to be checked and they could not hear any sound after keeping the damn thing for a week when they had it up in the air but it began as soon as I pulled out of the garage. Although this is a 99, it only has 15K miles on it. Long story about that, but point the vehicle is nearly mint. And, I have an extended warranty till end of the year to get it fixed. Anyone got any ideas as to what I could tell a mechanic to look for so it doesn't sit in a garage for a week again?
I'm not the greatest mech and my son is deployed again. So be gentle.
thanks.

My first thought is to look at the brakes, backing plates and any part that might be touching as the tire turns with weight on it.. Big JIm

Since you have a warranty that will run out soon: If the vehicle doesn't make the noise when it's on a hoist in the shop, but it makes the noise when you're driving it, the obvious answer is -- hve the mechanic go on a test drive with you, and point out the noise to him.

Did that but (of course) no noise. That is until I headed home and it started up again. Live in very small town with almost no mech sources, at least one that knows anything about a jeep. Found a guy yesterday and he is willing to look at it, but don't have a good feeling about his knowledge. Drove the darn thing yesterday about 45 miles up to the "big" city for doctors appointment and it screeched/scraped like hell from the time I pulled out until I got there. Only can hear it from 0-20 mph then noise and speed make it impossible to hear it. Drove back without any noise whatsover to the garage where we as usual heard nothing. Got down the road about 10 miles and started again. Seems to be in the driveshaft rear. Really difficult to tell when you are driving. Can hear it when coasting in and getting close to running over wife as she tries to stand outside and pinpoint sound I'm gonna 4 wheel jack it this weekend and see if will make the noise so that at least I know where it comes from. Believe, however, it is not in the drive back to the sye, but into the tran or inside the tran. Just hate to tear the darn thing up. Big city has crysler/jeep mechs but Chrysler will not honor warranty because it is an extended warranty without the Chrysler name on it. Have to go to and find a garage accepting the warranty. Never buy an extnded one again. Buying Honda next time. Thanks for reply.

Yeah, that was my first thought but I still believe it is in the drive at the rear. I'm gonna try a 4 wheel jack this weekend and spin everything. Did a two wheel jack last week and noise disappeared. Probably the next noise to be heard is when the damned thing falls on my tired old body.
Thanks for answering.

you might need a slip yoke bc sometimes on the pro comp the drive shaft will be at too much of an angle and many times causes a "scraping" noise.

Try adjusting the ebrake cable. You said it would not do it right away, or up on the lift. The brakes will get warm after a little bit of driving, and can swell just a bit...maybe enough to start rubbing a bit.

As has been suggested, I would look at the rear brakes. As you're driving, does applying pressure on the brake pedal have any effect on the noise? How are your rear wheel bearings? If you jack the rear wheels up, can you shake the wheels up and down and side to side? Do you have any body parts rubbing against tires? That could explain why when the mechanic went for a ride with you the sound went away--different loading on springs. Just my thoughts. Stuff like this can drive a guy nuts.
