CEL light on, new O2 sensor? #880424 04/12/08 01:27 AM

Need a Spot
I got a CEL with code P0131, "O2 sensor circuits, low volts, bank 1, sensor 1". A quick search tells me it's probably the first O2 sensor gone bad, but that it could also be the crappy wiring. Exactly how do you check the wiring? How far back into the harness should I check?

Also, my Kia is running very rich, with some black smoke coming out the tailpipe and getting horrible gas mileage. Could this be as a result of the faulty O2 sensor or could there be another problem lurking?

Any recommendations for a genreric/universal O2 sensor?

TIA,

Javier S.

Engine is not getting any feedback from the O2 sensor and is therefore running in "limp home" mode. This will cause the symptoms you describe.

Apart from cleaning the contacts on the sensor, your best bet may be to change the sensors over (if your engine has two) and see if the code changes. If the code changes then it is the sensor at fault, if it doesn't then it is the wiring.

Bosch apparently make the sensors so they may be the best ppl to contact about replacements.

I had the same problem codes show after buying two new sensors and post replace-ment.

My remedy was ...spraying electrical de-greaser on the connectors (it is quick dry).

My problem never came back! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

The can of d-degreaser was about $4.00 .......

Body Damage is Cool
When I replaced my 96 sportage o2 sensors a LOOOOOONG time ago, I used the generic Bosch ones, not the expensive ones just for the Sportage. Saved a bunch of money and they worked fine. I did have the rewire the connectors though, reusing the old ones.
