I've yet to see an engine that required the driver to floor it simply because the transmission downshifted. If it takes 3rd geard at half throttle to run up a grade, it doesn't matter if you manually downshift or the transmission does it automatically. The power needed to move the truck stays the same regardless.

Leaving the transmission in 3rd gear when 4th would do just fine has you wasting gasoline with a pointlessly revved up engine. Not a particularly practice.
