hey guys, hi, i am new here and to mitsubishis. after years of using nissan patrol diesels i had been offered a very clean 1993 mitsu pajero 2.5 intercooler turbo diesel with automatic transmission. the car has 100k kms thats 60,000miles. i just need to know what all to look out for and what all to service/replace after i buy it. from what i read, i think its best to replace the timing belts and pulleys right away? also the engine smoked a cloud of black- heavily when i had accelerated..also didnt accelerate as i expected but gained speed slowly..the intercooler placed on top of the engine has no hood scoop to take in air or anything..seems weird. the car is a JDM. the engine is 4D56T and the chassis is V44xxx.. pls suggest what all i should be doing to get this paj back to its prime.
oh and the sunroof is stuck too..

I would recommend to get the timing belt, water pump, seals and idler/pulley's replaced.

Change your oil/fuel filters and transmission/differential/engine fluids.

Check your brakes, balljoints and linkages.

Also check your wheel bearings. Those are notorious for failing if the brakes have been heating up/calipers seized.

Where are you located ?

If you're in the lower mainland, I would recommend you take your Pajero to CVI shell in richmond.

The two guys are from the phillipines and are Pajero/Delica specialists.

They know these vehicles inside and out.

$300 will get you a Pajero/Delica 'tune'. Set timing, injection, supersonic injector clean and adjustment.

the acceleration won't be too fast, these are pretty slow trucks. and for the intercooler, if you look on the underside of the hood, there is ducting that gives it airflow from the grille and routes the airflow through the hood to the top of the intercooler. there is also a small fan on the underside of the intercooler to cool it. the 2.8 4M40 engine got the hood scoop which came out later in 1993.

but timing belts/ fluids are a good place to start.

thanks guys those are great inputs, i am located in Dhaka, Bangladesh so thats thousands of miles away from you guys! one more question... what are good engine oils to use in that engine? i have been using Caltex Delo 400 in my nissans 15w-40 they seem good. what spec differential oil to use? and automatic transmission fluid? and did this model come with the mitsus renowned super select 4wd system?
thanks a bunch

As far as the heavy smoke goes you may need to clean out the egr valve, and intercooler.

from what i got as service history of the vehicle, it seems the car went through an oil and filters change every 2 months regardless of kms travelled. the suspension has got all new parts 4 months ago.. new tie rods, ball joints, and shocks.
it had a new starter motor installed a month ago, and they have worked on changing timing seals and worked on the fuel pump and power steering pump kits have been changed. i dont see a timing belt change. and the thing that worries me is steering box.. they seemed to have worked on that few years ago..hope thats good.
anyone can provide what the correct timing and injector patterns should be?

One thing that i noticed was a lot of cars in warm weather climates just run water in the rad and most will get rust/corrosion build up in the motor that leads to over heating ...do a good cooling system flush and change your thermostat ...black smoke when you first step on it is fuel before your boost builds ...i'd get a boost gauge to make sure you are making proper boost (10-12psi) ...i'm running 25+ PSI boost with my fuel turned up 1 1/2 turns and i still get black smoke ....and LOTS of power

yes you have noticed right, most cars older than 4-5 years start using water in the radiator here in warmer climate areas, one is because they dont have proper knowledge about coolants or they simple dont want to spend on something that they think does the same job as water...! anyways i will be flushing the cooling system and using coolant..any specific brands? is antifreeze the same as coolant? doesnt sound so?! how and where to get boost checked? and also set timing and pump timing? 4d56 turbo boost starts at what rpm on a stock motor? have u changed/upgraded your turbo?

Antifreeze is not the same as coolant. Antifreeze usually does not have the same performance as coolant, as it is intended for cold climates (has antifreeze agents, so the radiator's contents do not turnt into ice). Look for a coolant intended for hot climates, as it has better anti-corrosion additives and possibly better cooling performace.

dieselguy, how do you get 25psi? how's your fuel economy?

he has a bigger turbocharger on his raider, and just cranked the boost up with a boost controller im assuming.
