I've heard the 4M40 is not so reliable as 4D56 is.

For what it's worth.... the local MMC dealer here (OZ) says the 4AM40 is more reliable - one reason being a timing chain rather than a belt.

i would agree...these timing belt days should have been long over especially with these SUVs that are put to such stressed driving conditions and are expected to be reliable. one minor belt can wreck havoc in the motor..

What else I've heard when chain stretch out a little bit you'll hear character metal noise under the hood...

Good luck!

I had a toyota 4X4 with the 22r motor. It had 300+ K and the chain was fine.

Timing chain on the 4m4* engine is designed to last the lifetime of the engine (it's not a service item).

Failures are very rare and usually traceable to incorrect fitting or rotating the engine in the wrong direction (which is a NO-NO on those engines).

timing chains are designed to last forver...aslong as you change your oil regularly they should never fail. this belt idea sure is stupid!

I can see the benefits to a belt system - quieter and lighter. If only they weren't such a PITA to change.
