Timing chain on the 4m4* engine is designed to last the lifetime of the engine (it's not a service item).

Failures are very rare and usually traceable to incorrect fitting or rotating the engine in the wrong direction (which is a NO-NO on those engines).

Don't ascribe to malice anything that can be adequately explained as stupidity!
