I knew my ball joints were a little sloppy (87 4runner) but when I checked them today ...holy moley, they seemed to have wore a lot since I last checked them. Anyways, I rember years back there was a great step by step procedure bouncing around. Anyone know where it is? I need to do both uppers and lowers, can it be done without pulling the hubs, brakes, and the whole magilla? Thought I remember that you don't have to pull the whole darn thing apart...

The '93 FSM at the top of the forum will work for your '87.
You don't need to remove the hubs, you can do one joint at a time, and not have to pull the entire wheel assembly off.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

It's a pretty easy job. Probably the only thing you'll even need the FSM for is the torque specs. Just do them one at a time and just replace what you see. Just have a pickle fork and a bfh handy and it will be pretty easy.

Where is that FSM, I don't see it?
They don't need to be pressed in?
If you do one at a time, I assume the one opposite the one your replacing will hold everything together right?

They don't need to be pressed in? No they are bolted in, only 5 nuts to be removed. If you do one at a time, I assume the one opposite the one your replacing will hold everything together right? Correct, though using a floor or bottle jack will be helpful to support the weight, once you disconnect the upper or lower ball-joint.

Interesting... I ordered upper and lower joints from 1sttoyotaparts (87 4Runner) and they are all a different p/n's ... ie. upper LEFT is differernt p/n than upper RIGHT etc. Never saw this before.

My driver side upper joint is bad, can I just replace that one or is usually better to do both upper and lower when you do them?

Chances are they are all bad/starting to fail, so It would be best to replace them all. However, if money is tight, you can just replace one at a time or one side at a time, if you wanted to spread the costs out over a few paychecks. Just remember that bad joints will cause poor alignment and tire wear, so you will want to fix them as soon as you can.

[color:"blue"] [/color] one at a time is the way togo...but when you do it the long way... you get a chance to check things out and grease/adjust up those wheel bearings, check/replace spindal bushings and check seals. fyi, enjoy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
