hello everyone, my name is Paul i,m new to this forum, but not new to toyota's i'm in need of some help. I have several trucks and have had many in the past, love these things. Anyway my 91 22re 4x4 5sp 108000 miles all stock was consuming coolant, gas,( 12-15mpg) and burning oil (1-2qts) per3-500 miles. tail pipe showed black soot. compression good. did hg (valve seals, deck, clean) cleaned upper intake which was very, very gummed up. Wp, timing chain and guides, plugs, wires etc.new crnk seal( no external leaks) now I still have gas and oil issues. coolant is ok now no over heating. all injectors show no resistance, is that a prob? can anyone help with a direction? thanks................stay muddy..

Coolant: Find the leaks. If you can't find any leaks, you're either burning it off, it's going into the oil, or it's evaporating on the block before you can trace it. Overflowing your radiator is a typical sign of a head gasket failure, which might not be picked up by a compression test.
Oil/Gas problems: I'm assuming you mean bad mileage and both fuel and oil consumption. What was your compression cranking?
First, check your timing, adjust your TPS (requires a timing check again). Cold start injectors somtimes leak - also the temperature control sensor for the ECU, if disconnected, indicates a very cold temperature - the ECU richens the truck and you get black soot at start and poor mileage.

thanks, the coolant leak was internal, near cyl 4, gasket done. the fuel and oil consumtion, not leaking externally, is still there. each cyl is 180-200 on comp check. timing was done several times, before and after new chain. Coolant temp sensor new as well. when I checked injectors for resistance they showed .001 in all. seems low spec calls for 13.0-15.0. not to sure if thats the problem. Orif cold start temp sensor is prob. lots of blue smoke on start up and runs terrible after its warm. thanks guys, this is one of the better forums i,ve been too. take care and stay muddy. 180-200 is pretty high compression. Gauges can be off though, but it could indicate that you've got a timing or really loose valve lash. I wouldn't worry about it if that gauge reads everything high. I would worry about it if it's just high on that vehicle. That truck shouldn't go much above 175psi compression.
There are coolant temp sensors. One on near the valve cover (for the gauge) and one near the front of the plenum (for the ECU. They're easy to test and rarely fail. I'm a proponent of checking them at the ECU via the right pin because that helps prove that there isn't a short in the system. A short would register as "hot" to the ECU though - so it's unlikely.
Injector resistance of .001 is a problem. That means internal short and extremely high current draw. I take it you checked them with the harness plug disconnected and tested across the two terminals?
I've never heard of 4 injectors failing though..

Blue smoke at start up is an indication of bad valve seals.

you were right, the guage is off alittle, another vehicle that runs fine, showed high and even. this is where my issues confuse me, I thought I also saw a small amount of gas on the inj. when I unplugged it. on the pins. thats odd.the smoke , in my mind, is excessive fuel burn. the head was sent to a reputable machine shop thats been in business for two generations. hard not to trust em. Maybe I should test ecu. or try a used one for awhile. even though I cant understand how that effects oil swallowing!! DARN TOYOTA's......thanks.......stay muddy.......P.

Def should not be gas on the injector pins. Again, unplug the injectors, if you're reading very low ohms - you've got something wrong with the injectors.

when I checked injectors for resistance they showed .001 in all. Not to diss you or anything, but at what range was your ohmmeter in while reading this value? If in the 10K ohm range, you are around 10 ohms value.
