ok, I removed the jamb (while holding the adjustment screw) and sure enough there was a small amount of fluid leaking from around the adjustment screw, so I put a small gasket that I had over the adjustment screw and put the jamb nut back on. Time will tell now.

btw. you have to hold the adjustment screw as you remove the jamb nut, otherwise this would adjust play into or out of your steering.
