Steering stabilizer? #883665 05/01/08 06:18 AM

Has anyone found it a good idea or necessary to install a steering stabilizer once ya start running the bigger tires? I've been noticing a slight 'wobble' in the steering wheel since the SSRs have been on for a while now. Can't seem to do any better balancing them so wondering if a stabilizer is in order.

Comments?

Thanks!!

Body Damage is Cool
Check first all the linkages on the steering for exes play
Mine is woobling at times but the problem is the the linkages on the big bar conecting the two sides
( sorry no technical terminology <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />)

Thanks but I got under there to check all that first & everything seems tight. That 'big bar' yur referring to is the center link & the one off the pitman arm is the drag link(I think).

Gunna put the stock tires back on & have the alignment checked. Still have'nt had that checked out since the lifting. Seems to track fine anyways.

Will let you guys know if I come up with anything.

Still working on putting together a collection of pics of the 'progress' <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />.

The idler arm bush is known to shag out really quickly, which can give you the wobbles. Don't bother getting an alignment done without having the bush changed as it won't fix the vibes as it is slop in the linkage. Spend the $50 or so and have a set made out of bronze billet.

When you have the idler bush fixed, have the alignment done with the tyres and wheels that you intend to use on road as they can pick up things like an out of round rim, or a rim that doesn't run true. Ditto for the tyres you have fitted.

Thanks Gary! I'll be sure to check that bushing. I'm gunna have to have the alignment done with the stock wheels cuz the new black DC-1s could get chipped up from the alignment devices.

So general opinion is that if all my steering components are ship shape I prolly should'nt need a stabilizer?

I'm running 31's no probs without stabiliser.... IIRC you are the only one that has ever brought this issue up in the last 5 yrs that I know of.
