I hear people saying that Turbo Diesel Isuzu Troopers get near 30 mpg, but I've never seen one... I have 2 86 Troopers and get around 22-23 mpg with mine. Exaggeration or fact on the 30 mpg's???

I suppose that this discrepancy has something to do with the difference between the English miles & gallons, and the American ones.

From what I've seen posted, the C223's are typically in the mid 20's. Those getting in the mid 30's have the newer diesels 4JB1/4JG2/etc. I think efficiency was increased quite a bit from the early 80's to the 90's.

I was wondering if maybe the 4.11 gear version got 2-4 mpg's more than the 4.56 gear version. Both of mine have the 4.56's. One has 116k and the other has 220k and the mpg's are the same...

In my 86 2 door TD Trooper I've kept fuel consumption logs for 3 years/35k miles and I get a solid 29 mpg (US gallon) for combined city/highway. I never fill up before I've gone 600 miles on one tank of fuel. Towing my boat (1000 lbs) mileage drops to 26. I never exceed 65 mph or 3000 rpm and have no AC. My non turbo Isuzu Pup got 38 mpg all day long. Great fuel efficiency is why I drive these vehicles!

I wish mine were getting that type of mileage!!! Do you have a boost guage? Do you know how much boost you're pushing? Do you know what the proper boost is?

I had a 2.8td diesel in my currant truck, this 35mpg on a long run (75mph). UK figures mind. If I work it out that's 29mpg with your size gallons.
The 3.1td that is in now gives more like 20mpg (16mpg to you) if I'm lucky <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
These two engines share the same block but the boor mpg of the 3.1 is due to it being indirect injection whereas the 2.8 is direct injection.
These are figures with stock tyres. With my mud tyres I am lucky to get 16mpg (13mph to you).

I've owned several Trooper TD's and I've never gotten any higher than 28 on the highway. Normal around town is 22-24 mpg for me.

I do have a boost gauge, and for normal everyday driving it shows 6-7 psi max. If I floor it, it goes to 10 psi above 2500rpm and if I exceed my own self imposed 3000rpm redline it creeps up to 12psi. I try to never go beyond 10 psi.

My boost is around 6-7 like yours for normal driving. Acceleration is 10-14 pounds of boost. Is this too much? Could this extra boost be hurting my fuel mileage? Also, my Trooper does smoke more than it should (diesel smoke). It smokes some at idle, but sometimes it looks like a mosquito sprayer. It always smokes on acceleration. What could cause that and would this also hurt the fuel mileage???
