I can't say a lot about the 6-bangers, but I'm shocked at the valve cover repair cost. Somehow that doesn't seem right, but then again, I haven't tried to do one. Maybe something difficult I don't know about. I do know that with some good shop tools, patience, and a good FSM, you can accomplish a great deal yourself. There are plenty of FSM's online, free of charge, including the second thread posted in the Index here. Download it and look at the valve cover removal under the Engine Mechanical section and see what you think.
