Body Damage is Cool
On my '94. Problem is more noticeable when cold, but still existent when warm. When I accelerate, it has no power (feels exactly like a clogged cat) until it hits about 3500rpms where it instantly picks up and accelerates normally after that. No CEL.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Scerb

>>>*Since you don't mention rough running or hesitations, or other types of operational concerns, here are some tips.

An RV type camshaft combined with oversized tires will create a lower RPM softer than normal feel.

Add in a freer flowing exhaust and it gets worse since RPM, thus velocity, is lower than it should be.

An engine that is cold is also richer and this would aggravate it. Another possible is late valve timing from the head/block perhaps having been surfaced?

A combination like that really isn't fun to drive plus it is rough on mileage.

The real solution is gearing if you haven't already, next would be to invest in an adjustable top gear and advance the cam a degree or two.....*EB

Well first off, this is a stock 22-re. The problem only started a couple weeks ago.. It doesn't seem to be misfiring, it seems to run smoothly - its just it will have no power. Once it hits 3500rpms it instantly picks up and throws you in your seat and winds right out. Something is definently not working correctly below 3500.

Kinda seems to me like maybe a timing advance problem?? Like the timing is being constantly advanced making it way off in the low rpms?

>>>*It could be something like that. For example, inadequate advance early that comes on suddenly would give that feel.

I know on our circle track cars we had the advance curve set at zero until the engine hit race speed due to very high compression ratios. The feeling was similar to what you describe, the response when the advance activated was sudden. We used to watch a skinny 16 year old kid named Biffle bounce his back fender off the fence when his car hooked, then blew the rear tires loose.

Adding more gear fixed that.

Of course in that situation we seldom got off what we call the "pipe" which is the point where everything is wide open and RPM up, advance full.

Since our 268C profile is typically from off-idle through the midrange with RPM running out around 4500 to 4800, my thought would be the cam is timed late.

That would be my best guess. I doubt the timing chain is off a link, that just makes them run like cr*p. Especially since you say this just started??

One way to check the advance would be to run the engine with a timing light, see what it does and when.

I also bet a CO2 reading at lower rpm would be way high, too. That will cause a similar reaction, as will an over-scavenged exhaust system....Let me know when you figure it out. I only have one other case of similar in my files and that one just needed the TPS reset....*EB

Hi
Mine too as the exactly same thing

I put a new muffler and new pipes. And put back the o2 sensor that the past owner took off. IT's help a lot.
I know I have a too rich mixture. I don'T know how to fix that. (check engine light up some time, code 25-26)

I'm not sure about the timing.

I have pretty much the same problem as well, but for me it doesn't happen 100% of the time. Also, it just started happening a couple of weeks ago.

What happens is that when I depress the throttle the engine just lags. If I keep depressing it all the more the engine then kicks in with nice power. Also, when I just mash on the throttle it will also kick in with nice power.

I have a A/F gauge hooked up, and I've observed that when I have this problem the O2 sensor doesn't oscillate like it normally does.

I'm wondering if I might have a bad O2 sensor, or if another sensor/system could be causing this? I'll have to troubleshoot it more, for sure. I just would like to know what would cause the O2 sensor to stop sending out an oscillating voltage?

CEL came on today. lean mixture, intake air temp sensor, and AFM. the air temp sensor is part of the AFM right?

Yep:

Check the connector and wiring at the AFM, I had similar problems a year or two ago and it turned out to be a loose connection in the AFM wiring (found that when I got the AFM/CEL code). I suspect it was a certain engine RPM and vibration that caused the connection to open up and make the engine cut in and out. Fixed the connection and all is fine now.
