I've recently given up my 93' SR for a 98" Sport. I'm getting 4 or 5 MPG less, I've lost room in the back and I no longer have dual bouncies. The Sport did Ok when i went in the MUD. Does anyone have any insight as to the MPG I should be getting? I had been getting 19 with my Sr and I seem to be getting 15 or 16 in the Sport...I guess I wasn't expecting that. Is it my imigination, or was older, better?

I think we need more info into the specs of your sport. What model is it? Whats the engine size? 2wd or 4wd? Recent tune-up? Tire size? City, Highway, mixed driving? Based on my own sport ('03 xls - full time 4wd) with slightly larger than stock tires I'm getting 15-16 mpg in the city and 18-20 on the highway.

My 98'is a Sport LS, 4X4, 3.0 24V with 31 x 10.50's with K&N filter. I'm lucky to get 15 Highway. I guess I'm getting a bit more comfortable with it, but I really miss the Bouncy seats and I'm a miss the headlight washers in the mud.

Just did a quick google search for your model and I'm assuming you have an auto. Most report 15 city, 19 hwy, 17 mixed. A heavier foot will reduce those numbers. Maybe you need to do a tune up?

In my '00 sport with 3.0 24v 4.90 axle ratios and 31x10.5 AT's I got killer gas milage, Like around 19-20 MPG. That was the only thing i liked about the sport vs the Montero.

Bill CanÆt address the seats or the space, but you should be getting the equivalent or higher with the Sport. Brand new on the stock 265s I was between 19-22 MPG. With 35x12 M/Ts, a SAS, 400K on the engine and a vehicle that now weighs in at just a tad under 5500 lbs. IÆm still getting between 17-19 MPG. Actually, it doesnÆt change when I load it up for camping. My XÆs 3.5L Æ99 got about 20-21 on the highway and my friends Æ98 3.0L does about the same. Neither my XÆs or my friends runs synthetic anything û theyÆre bone stock with the exception of the lock-out hubs I put on my XÆs year before last. I know that with full synthetic lube in the diffs, t-case, transmission and engine, lock out hubs, a realistic (2.25ö-2.5ö) CAT-back system, the K&N FIPK air filter and the 31ö BFG A/Ts you can get into the 22-24 MPG range in town on the 5-speed Sports. Been there, done that on a couple Æ97-99s. The synthetic lube brand makes a difference. I run Amsoil for everything except the engine which gets Mobil 1. I have been running Redline in my diffs until this year û that stuff is like pudding until it gets REALLY hot. In the summer where itÆs hot thatÆs not a big deal but in the winter that stuff turns to glue and your gas mileage goes straight to hell. Fun time trying to get my Æ97 to move when itÆs 10 below. :-( Amsoil GL5 gear lube has a thinner consistency but does just as good a job as far as IÆve been able to tell in the last 25 years. A suggestions - If you havenÆt run a couple cans of the BG 44K through. Odds are it wasnÆt done and the top end may be getting a little gunky. Worked wonders for my XÆs Æ99. :-) Running the BG MOA in the bottom with your oil change isnÆt a bad idea, either. How many miles does your Sport have on it. I assume itÆs the automatic, yes? Edward

Yep, It's an automatic, I'll try the synthetics, I already use Mobile 1 in the engine. What are the additives? I haven't heard of them before? I assume I can get them in any auto parts store? Thanks, Bill

Most national chain stores don't carry BG products. Go to a nasty garage and they'll probably have it and be happy to sell you some. You could also use Seafoam. Half the can goes in the gas, other half in the oil. I saw a difference after using it.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
