Well, if it was my truck and I knew I had a bad IAC I would probably pony up the $$$ and replace that with a new one first. If that didn't solve the issue, then I'd be seriously thinking of taking it to my mechanic and paying him for some quality time with his specialized diagnostic tools to look at the ignition, fuel injector pulse rate/duration, O2 sensor operation, etc.

I recall (the last time I started and ran mine ) when started cold that mine idled pretty high also until it warmed up but once I dropped it into gear (Automatic) it didn't stay at that high but dropped down significantly (probably 30-40% IIRC).
If it put it right back to park/neutral it would kick back up though.
After it warmed up it ran at ~700 rpm.
IIRC it always behaved this way.

IIRC it always behaved this way. x2 on all my Monteros. I still say it is supposed to idle higher when cool.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

IIRC it always behaved this way. x2 on all my Monteros. I still say it is supposed to idle higher when cool. Both of you are correct. Mine idles high when cold until it reaches operating temp. Mine also does the same as Ray's when I put it in gear and go back to park. What he's saying is that it runs like doo-doo until it's at op temp. Mine doesn't do that. Mine runs fine if I hop in and go. Makes no difference if it's cold or hot. His, apparently, does not run fine when it's cold, but it does when it's hot. Clear as mud now, right
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

yes it is all in one place, but I dont think the answer has yet been revealed
I am looking now at the FSM and chiltons. Nuther even mentions the wax pellet valve... Must have been the stealth site where I saw some info on it
So how to check it off my to do list? Remove throttle body and give it a look-see? Is not something that will unbolt without removing throttle body?

it takes about 10 seconds to feel the heat at the valve/hoses. If it was working as designed (or was designed to work?) then the idle would drop then.
Now that the montero can sit still for awhile, I will get to look into this...when i get time

well just for kicks I replaced the thermostat this weekend, and it runs the same. high idle for 6-10 min and sluggish, then it runs perfect after that. I think I'll give up now. lol it's a safe bet that the extra long fast idle is common but not normal. the rough running could be another differnt matter the IAC you got from the junkyard was the same size as yours?

yes the jy iac was the same size, but slightly different, but the ohm readings were way different.
