If you are mechanically inclined, I don't think it is hard. There are some great write ups on the internet, think one or two w/ pictures on our very own 4x4wire toyota page. It may be under the tacoma 3.4l engine section.

The only "Special" tool I enjoyed was the snap on pulley tensioner press. Sears supplied everything else. First time for me took about 8 hours of work. The 3.4l is a non-interference engine so if you screw up atleast you will not destroy anything.
