so what are the differences between 97, 98 & 99. Is there horsepower differences or anything else?

I know the 99 was the only and last year they changed the front end a lil, and thats all I can tell from just looking at pictures. Anything else different? I'm starting to become obsessed about the VR4 and thinking how much I would love to drive one

Lately I've been thinking of another vehicle, tho a GT is not a gas sipper, you can still find them for a decent deal.

Question is, any long term problems the turbos have as they age or have more miles on them. Do the turbos wear out or any thing else that some have heard. Just interested in hearing

Angelo,

I'm not 100% sure about a mitsu 3kGT but from owning my Audi S4 I've learned there are certain caveat's w/ taking care of and owning a turbo engine...

1) Only use Synthetic Motor Oil. Not partial synthetic much less old school "dino" oil. The problem is the turbo is cooled by your engine oil. Non-synthetic oils just break down much to quickly w/ the added heat from a turbo. Bad oil will quickly mean a burnt up turbo... one thing you don't want. (I shouldn't have to add that you need to change it regularly). Have your oil analyzed to learn if it needs to be every 5k or if you can go longer. Some Audi owners are able to go as long as 10k miles between changes due to how clean the oil stays.

2) Only drive aggressively after the engine oil is warm, and definitely NEVER when the oil is not at operating temp. You need an oil temp gauge for this. For example I know with mine as soon as my oil temp gauge moves I'm golden. I should add that my engine coolant is at operating temp for about 5-10 minutes before the oil gauge starts to move.

3) After "spirited driving" you MUST allow the engine to cool a bit before shutting it off. A lot of times the turbo may be glowing red hot and simply turning off the engine in this state is a HUGE no no!! This is one reason turbo timers are very popular.

4) Check for Vacuum leaks in the intake. Having them can be the death of a turbo.

3000 GT VR4

This guy knows just about all there is to know about the 3000GT. What he did to his is sick. He does have a lot of the history and stock specs on his website too. You could read his site for hours. hope this helps. I personally like the older ones b/c they have automatically adjusting spoilers that change their angle depending upon the speed at which you are traveling as well as adjustable exhaust modes, shocks, and of course the 4 wheel steering. I love gadgets

there is a local shop that specialize in mainly 3000gts and Stealths. They started branching out a lil once the gts discontinued. But word is that they are the "go to" guys in the carolinas when pros need work on their VR4s and Stealths.

Thanks for the info Scottie.

93 was the last of the pop ups. 94 got glass and 95-99 had lexan.

from a question asked earlier....97-99 difference simple answer.....99s have a different front bumper, rear wing and center garnish. long answer....

different ecu, wiring harnesses, front bumper, headlights, turn signals, rear wing, taillight center garnish, coolant bottle changed in 98. evap system changed in 98. passenger side intercooler and piping changed in 98 to fit the larger charcoal canister....

you could say i know a thing or 2 about the 3/s

craigs (cjbyron) site is pretty good. you will find everything you need on 3si but be careful who you listen to. its not the same as it was a couple years ago. there is a wealth of misinformation on there now.
