That, and weak axles, that as a bonus are a pain to regear. Compare a D35 diff to any Toyota diff sometime, the robustness of the Toy diff is amazing in comparison, and they are very easy to work on.

By the time you fix a Cherokee to be robust and have the gearing options of a 4Runner with a Marlin Ultimate, you may as well have done a coilover SAS on a newer 4Runner and have a more reliable vehicle to boot. If you want to wheel a stocker, the Cherokee may or may not get the nod.
