There are three boucy seat bases that I've seen in Gen I's:
1. to Jan 87, there was the spring type that has the adjuster on the left side (LHD models), 4 mount holes;
2. from Feb 87 to late 88 with the introduction of the V6 model, the seat base has a shock absorber, adjuster on the front, and 4 mount holes;
3. The V6 introduction plus is the same as No. 2, but with two additional mounts located at the rear of the assembly.

There were some differences in the scales, too. Some read by pounds, others read by soft to hard. I've had examples of all these bases. My Raider has the 4-bolt shock bases, my wife's 4-door has one 6-bolt, one 4-bolt.

The impression of being too close to the dash may be the steering wheel, larger on the late models, smaller on the early models.
