I would like to point out 1 thing, regarding this incident. This incident could have happened in someone's garage, and with every type of car/truck out there. I don't want people thinking that this incident is specifically a result of this event. We all need to be safe when jacking up a vehicle, and place a tire under both sides. If we can't get a tire underneath it, then we need to find something else to back up the jack. This is just in case the jack fails. This rule holds true when we work on our rigs on the trail, or when we work on our cars at home.
I think it would be be very helpfull for Troy, Jeff, and anyone else who has served as a trailleader and/or tailgunner, to debrief this call to improve any future emergency response needs. Troy could share his experience in having to handle this emergency, so that other's will be more prepared in the future.
Fernando, Travis, and myself handle emergencies like this every day at our FIRE/EMS jobs, but we are not always going to be around.
I would be very interested in facilitating some discussion on this matter, and how we can improve our handaling of any future emergencies encountered on the trail.

Very true. There was a recent incident with a planet member that was cranking his t-bars with the truck sitting on the ground and no jack or stands. The t-bar bolt broke and the truck dropped on him. No serious injuries in that case, just bruises and soreness but could have been much worse. Always make sure there is something to keep the truck from dropping on you when working under it.

Just to be clear...I'm not blaming anyone for this incident. I consider Troy one of my good friends, and know that he was really affected by seeing his friend Jeff hurt. However, Jeff is going to be fine. I think this incident should be used as a reminder, to save us from making the same mistake. Most of us are friends here, and I consider some of the folks here like extended family. Jeff and I share a similar trait, when someone breaks we get enthusiastic in helping them out with trail repairs. I'm quite sure there are other folks here, that have that same desire to get involved in helping someone fix their rig. That's why I think this incident is a healthy reminder for alot of us, to not get lazy with safety. I've noted the lesson myself, and Jeff was a great teacher. However, I would appreciate it if he would not teach us such a lesson in the future. The lesson has way too many emotional bumps, for my particular liking.

Just a follow up for everyone.
Jeff was able to come home on Friday. He drove the 4.5 hours with his wife and has been resting. He is getting up and around a little bit here and there. He says each day is getting better.
Anyway, just thought some people may want to know.

He left a post in Travs t-case thread on friday. Here is the text of it. dropping a 5500 pound rig on your abdomin is one way of meeting really brainy chicks.
However it's severly overated as a continual means to do so.
I'm out of hosptial care and am now home.
I still got a few really big hurdles to get over in the next month
Rehab is excrutiatingly painful!!!!!!!!!
I hate pain killers
Thanks for the strong backs we had along the trip to get the Rig off of me.............................That still blows me away.
Thanks for 1.5 dozen or so folks who took the time out of their vacation to stop in and say hello and the other 2 dozen easily that called, while I was being tormented in Grand Junction hospital.
Alway help a fellow wheeler out
No your safety steps and don't take for granted that they are in place. Sometimes we get complacent with routine things.
I hope that this accident hasn't miscouraged anyone from participating in our sport but only serves as an example of what not to do....................I planned it that way
The first aid given while WAITING for the "first aid" folks was stop notch and I absolutely certain I would of not been able to type this correspondence.
WOW, the flowers were enormous! you should of seen the elderly lady trying to push the cart.

I would like to thank all the people who talked to me and helped me out after i saw my rig fall on my good friend. I had nightmares of my rig falling on Jeff about every 15 minutes while I tried to sleep for a week. I also would like to thank all< including Jeff for helping me do the trail repairs to tonka. Glad to hear you are doing well Jeff.

What a scary story, I'm glad it had a happy ending. Jeff is a great guy to be with. What he was doing at the time of the accident (working on someone else's rig) is really telling of how he treats people, and what makes the Isuzu community such a great place.
Get better soon Jeff. Keep doing what you love.

Damn glad to hear he is out of the hospital and home with sense of humor intact.
I've always breathed a small sigh of relief when I have trained first-responders on hand when I 'wheel. I'm blessed to have that often pretty handy on the Rubicon, and Fernando, Keith, Travis, and Jeff have always been folks I've looked to in Moab. I'm glad we can all live and learn from this.
Get well, soon, Jeff! I hope to see you in Moab for Crawloween!
